Netflix to release MOST expensive film of the year as they splash out on $166m movie that’s been 20 years in the making
Netflix will go out with a bang this year as the streaming service has announced it is releasing its most expensive film of 2023.
With only a month left, Netflix is preparing to drop a host of new content this month, including the $166 million budget movie.
The platform is releasing the hotly-anticipated Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon just in time for Christmas.
Split into two parts, the first instalment is set to arrive on viewers screens on December 22, while the second part, The Scargiver, is predicted to drop in April 2024.
And Vanity Fair has estimated the project has a budget of $166 million, making it Netflix’s most expensive film of the year.

Zach has indicated in past interviews that he’s been working on this story for the past 20 years, and at one point it was a pitch for a new Star Wars movie.
The first part sets up the ‘star-trotting epic’ which is centred around Sofia Boutella’s character Kora – ‘a lone-wolf soldier who’s found community and connection on the quiet farming moon of Veldt.’
The IMDB synopsis reads: ‘When a peaceful settlement on the edge of a distant moon finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, a mysterious stranger living among its villagers becomes their best hope for survival.’
Instead of relying on CGI and visual effects to help bring his sci-fi world to life, Zach chose to use much of the budget to build the sets in Santa Clarita canyon just outside Los Angeles.
Crews got to work there creating a Scandinavian-style village complete with homes, shops and barns, a stone bridge and even an entire river.
Ensuring it looked as realistic as possible, the director also insisted they grew real crops for the farmers to harvest in the film.
While there is no confirmed release date for part two, Zach told Vanity Fair that fans won’t have too long to wait.
‘It won’t be long after. Netflix can do things that a traditional studio can’t do as far as how close together the movies are released,’ he explained.

Zack Snyder, (pictured), has been working on Rebel Moon for roughly 20 years, in which time he has directed a vast array of hit movies
He previously told Netflix: ‘I’ve been working on this idea for this film Rebel Moon for about 20 years.’
In that time, he has directed a host of DC movies including The Flash, Wonder Woman, and Man Of Steel.
His cast for this latest venture includes Anthony Hopkins voicing a robot called Jimmy, and Deadpool’s Ed Skrein as sadistic admiral Atticus Noble.
Rebel Moon is the latest collaboration between Snyder and Netflix following his 2021 feature Army Of The Dead.
That bodes well for the new venture, with the film viewed by 72 million households in its first four weeks, according to the streaming platform.
He also wrote Army Of Thieves, Netflix’s prequal to the aforementioned original, and is working on a sequel and anime spinoff series.
