The Duchess of Sussex has thrown herself into her new royal patronages since the positions were announced last month. And having visited the organizations of which she is now a royal patron, it sounds as though Meghan is already hard at work understanding the issues they’re facing.
Per The Times, during her visit to the ACU last month, Meghan reportedly expressed her support for a campaign which seeks to “‘decolonize the curriculum’ and confront the legacy of empire and racism on university campuses.” The campaign seeks to ensure diversity within both the teaching staff at an institution, and within the curriculum.
The Times reports that Meghan heard “a presentation from Meera Sabaratnam, who is leading a push to decolonize the curriculum at the School of Oriental and African Studies.” Reportedly, the Duchess of Sussex said, having heard the talk, “Just open up that conversation so we are talking about it as opposed to continuing with that daily rote… sometimes that approach can be really antiquated and needs an update.”
The publication also reports that the Duchess of Sussex was allegedly shown “a sheet of data showing that UK professors were overwhelmingly white men.” Of learning about the lack of women and people of color in professorial roles in British universities, Meghan was reportedly surprised and said, “Oh my God.”
It’s clear that Meghan’s passion for access to a fair education will influence the work she does in her royal patronages, and that’s exciting.
