Billed as Honorary Co-Chairpersons of the Lupus Research Alliance’s big annual fundraiser at the Ziegfield in Manhattan last night, Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez both failed to attend. The Lupus Research Alliance’s official twitter account announced only yesterday afternoon that the two would not be in attendance for the event.
The news was spread a bit unusually, in that the it did not come in the form of a big announcement. Instead, the Lupus Research Alliance appears to have only corrected a few tweets publicizing the appearance of Lady Gaga and Selena at the event with their own response that the two pop singers “unfortunately” would not be able to make the fundraiser.
We have an example of what the Lupus Research Alliance appears to have posted below.
Lady Gaga sent a supportive message to the event that was showed to attendees, and Selena was featured in a short segment about one little girl’s struggle with the condition. But no real details were shared about why the two honorary chairpersons could not attend in person. Both have been contending with some recent personal challenges.
The gala’s third honorary Co-Chairperson, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, did attend in person. And, in terms of what was most important, the event appears to have been a very successful one, breaking all past records for fundraising with a reported $3.5 million in donations.
