I’m A Celebrity: Campmates lose a combined FIVE stone after 700 calories-a-day rice and beans diet… as it is revealed the show’s first episode was the most watched of the year

The I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! campmates have each lost at least half a stone since they entered the jungle ten days ago – as the show becomes the most watched programme of the year.

The celebrities survived mostly on a ration of rice and beans, with the occasional ‘lean meal of meat and healthy vegetables’ thrown in for good measure.

It meant hunks like Rugby star James Haskell and former Arsenal footballer Ian Wright faced a drastic reduction in their calorie intakes.

Rations: Nadine Coyle, 34, who was slender even as she first walked into the camp went through a subtle transformation as her cheekbones became more prominent

James, 34, was used to eating 4,000 calories a day but had to adapt to the reality of just 700 calories every 24 hours while in the Australian jungle.

Even Nadine Coyle, 34, who was slender even as she first walked into the camp, went through a subtle transformation as her cheekbones became more prominent.

A jungle source told The Sun: ‘There’s not been a lot of food on offer this first week, with many subjected to just basic rations and even when the food has been won through trials it’s still tiny portions compared to what many are used to.

‘Even when they get a proper feed it’s still a lean meal of meat and healthy vegetables.

Losing bulk: James, 34, was used to eating 4,000 calories a day but had to adapt to the reality of just 700 calories every 24 hours while in the Australian jungle

‘James has seen the biggest drop in weight, which is not surprising given how big he was when he went in.’

James admitted on the ITV2 spin off show Extra Camp he was ‘slowly wasting away’.

He said: ‘I never thought I would look at a menu and chose crocodile feet. We’re still only getting 700 calories per day.

Rice and beans: Kate Garraway’s face looked more slender as temperatures remained consistently high at around 86F (30C)

‘Wasting away’: The food rations meant hunks like Rugby star James Haskell and former Arsenal footballer Ian Wright faced a drastic reduction in their calorie intakes

‘We’re slowly wasting away, but wasting away with dignity! We’re literally scraping the barrel of discovering different ways of cooking rice and beans and trying to add some flavour.’

Temperatures remained consistently high at around 86F (30C), meaning the celebrities were forced to drink up to 3 litres of water a day.

It comes after the latest viewing figures revealed 13,171,000 people tuned in to watch the show – either live, online or on catch up – over the last week.

The figure is roughly half a million more than the May 5 episode of Line Of Duty which attracted 12,693,000 viewers and was the previous chart topper.

The launch episode of I’m a Celeb, on November 17, was the most watched programme of 2019.
