Iggy Pop, 73, takes a dip in Miami Beach… after releasing COVID-inspired track Dirty Little Virus

Grammy winner Iggy Pop took a New Year’s day dip in the ocean not far from his home in Miami Beach.

The 73-year-old ‘Godfather of Punk’ showcased his lust for life by splashing around in nothing more than sun-patterned swim trunks.

Iggy (born James Osterberg Jr.) then dried off with a pink-striped towel before tanning his bronzed 5ft6in body.

Missing from Pop’s side on Friday was his third wife Nina Alu, with whom he celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary on November 22.

The Stooges frontman – who grew up in a Michigan trailer park – just starred in an inspiring commercial for On the Beach UK about returning to normalcy after the pandemic.

‘That was some year, oh boy. The sun came out and we were stuck inside, locked down loco,’ Iggy said in the Christmas Day advert.

‘Working from home became sleeping at the office and shaking hands became, well, odd. We stood outside and we clapped for our carers. We followed government guidelines. Eat in, eat out, stay in, breathe out. We fouight for toilet rolls and sanitized our hands enough to last a lifetime.

‘Our wedding got canceled. Our graduation was postponed, and we’re just the lucky ones. We got angry, we got sad, we cried, but we pick ourselves up and we start again knowing the sun’s always shining somewhere. And at some point, someday, you’ll be on your dream holiday thinking, “Is it too early for a drink?” No, no it’s not. Remember, everything’s better on the beach and it’s ready when you are.’

Speaking of COVID-19, Pop surprised his fans with a new coronavirus-inspired song titled Dirty Little Virus on December 21.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and producer Leron Thomas co-wrote the track featuring lyrics like: ‘Grandfather’s dead / Got Trump instead’ and ‘She’s only 19, but she can kill you.’

‘I was moved to write a direct lyric, not something too emotional or deep, more like journalism,’ Iggy – who boasts 2.5M social media followers – explained on his YouTube page.

‘Who, what, when, where – I left out the why because that gets too complex. But I put in all I felt about it. It was a stopper for me. It’s been the big thing happening in my life and everybody else’s, I reckon, for almost a year now. If there was still a Man of the Year, it would be the virus, so I wrote the lyric.’

However, Pop hasn’t released a full-blown studio album since Ready to Die in 2013 with The Stooges.
