How Lucas Torreira has a link to pies

Fray Bentos is being put on the map – in north London.

No, Arsenal haven’t added the famous pies to the menu at the Emirates Stadium, their new hero Lucas Torreira is from the Uruguayan city of Fray Bentos.

The capital city of the Rio Negro Department in the South American nation is the birthplace of Torreira – who joined the Gunners from Sampdoria in the summer.

Fray Bentos boasts a population of just under 25,000 people, enough to fill the Emirates twice, and is known for its industrial plant – which is a World Heritage Site.

Up until the 1960s Fray Bentos was processed and package in Fray Bentos – but despite that, Torreira, and most other Fray Bentos-ites, are unaware of the British brand.

"It’s a tiny town of about 25,000 people but despite the small population, it’s very good for football," Torreira told Sportsbeat.

"There are about 11 teams in the town so despite the population, there’s a lot of potential to produce good footballers.

"Last year, when I had a good year for Sampdoria, people in Fray Bentos started to realise it and recognise my family. Now I know Gaston as well.

"Before last year, Gaston had come back to Fray Bentos on holiday a couple of times but we didn’t really have a relationship where we would greet each other or anything like that – we weren’t friends or companions.

"He was an example to follow though – he was in the national team and playing on a global stage – but he wasn’t a friend.

"But last year we got to know each other.

"Fray Bentos known for pies in the UK.

"I’m aware of the Fray Bentos pies! I’d been in the UK for about a week and I was in a supermarket near my house and saw them there.

"It’s great for us and for our city to have this type of exposure."
