When Barbara Bush tied the knot with actor Craig Coyne over the weekend at the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, it wasn’t just her venue that held sentimental value: The bride’s “something borrowed” was from her late grandmother (and namesake) Barbara Bush, who died at the age of 92 in April.
“It’s really sweet. The ‘something borrowed’ that I’m wearing is this bracelet that my grandfather gave to my grandmother on their 70th anniversary,” Bush, 36, told People.
Her “something blue” was another family heirloom — a pair of earrings from twin sister Jenna Bush Hager. The bride’s custom Vera Wang cowl-neck gown featured a floor-length cape and matching veil made from Italian tulle.
Family was a big part of the intimate ceremony: The bride’s aunt Dorothy Bush Koch officiated, while Hager’s young daughters Margaret and Poppy served as flower girls.
Even Coyne’s proposal was sentimental: Five weeks before the wedding, he popped the question to Bush in the same oceanside spot where her grandparents got engaged in August 1943, almost exactly 75 years earlier.
