England captain Harry Kane has urged the country to get behind Wayne Rooney for his one-off return this month.
The Spurs marksman – who rescued his club’s Champions League hopes against PSV on Tuesday night – has also revealed he would be prepared to give England’s record goalscorer the captain’s armband for friendly on November 15.
“Yes of course,” he said. “He deserves it. He was a great captain for us. He was the captain when I first got into the squad. If he plays, of course he’ll be the captain.”
He then insisted the Three Lions’ dressing room is fully behind the move to hand Rooney a controversial 120th cap against USA.
“I think it’s great,” said Kane. “It’s a real good thing for everyone to be a part of.
“Wayne was one of our greatest ever England players. He’s our greatest goal scorer and so why not give him the send-off he deserves.
“I’ve not spoken to Gareth [Southgate] too much about how he’s going to do it or how long he’s going to play but it will be great to see him again and I’m sure he’ll be looking forward to seeing a few of the boys.
“It’s a great experience to have for the younger players in our team.
“Everyone should get right behind it and it will be a great send-off.”
The FA are understood to have backtracked on plans to make Rooney a key figure in the game for fear of upsetting the current England dressing room.
It means he will no longer wear the no.10 shirt he wore during his time with the national team. Nor will he lead the team out onto the pitch or take the armband from Kane.
Instead Rooney is now likely to come on for 10-15 minutes at the end of the game.
