The Crown season four: Emma Corrin emulates Princess Diana as she recreates the royal’s 1989 trip to the Brooklyn Academy of Music in a Victor Edelstein gown… but it is all filmed in the UK!
- Diana, Princess of Wales visited New York in 1989, where a charity gala was held in her honour at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on February 3
- She stunned in a champagne dress with golden beaded detailing by Victor Edelstein, which was replicated for the scenes actress Emma wore for The Crown season four on Sunday night
- The scenes were shot in Manchester, England, rather than the real New York, with the streets dressed to resemble Brooklyn, where the Academy hosted a Welsh National Opera performance of Falstaff
- The New York Times wrote of the evening at the time: ‘The royal box was bedecked with swags of purple and red satin and greenery and the guests played musical chairs… with five taking turns sitting next to the princess while nine others rotated around the box’
- The Crown scenes saw Emma arriving at the event and waving to the crowds outside, swarmed by security and photographers, without Josh O’Connor who plays her on-screen husband Prince Charles
While Queen Elizabeth II actress Olivia Colman hit Hollywood on Sunday night to present the Best Actor gong at the 92nd Academy Awards, her The Crown co-star Emma Corrin was busy shooting New York City scenes for the Netflix show’s fourth season.
But Emma remained on home turf to recreate the moment Princess Diana visited the Big Apple in 1989, as the scenes were shot on the streets of Manchester, dressed to replicate Brooklyn.

The top of the gown featured a corset design and the satin skirt swept dramatically to the ground.
Emma’s blonde locks were styled slightly longer than when Diana – who died in a car accident in Paris in 1997 – made the visit in 1989.
She sported the same delicate touches of make-up, however, and wore a pair of pearl drop earrings, as Diana did when she attended the Welsh National Opera Gala production of Falstaff.
