Ellie Goulding reveals her exercise addiction took over her life

‘I had to go to the gym every day’: Ellie Goulding reveals her exercise addiction took over her life and how husband Caspar Jopling helped her

Ellie Goulding has revealed how her addiction to exercise took over her life.

The singer, 33, candidly spoke about how she felt she had to go to the gym everyday and would miss out on going to the studio or skip writing sessions to workout.

Ellie revealed it was her former Olympic rower husband Caspar Jopling who helped her overcome her addiction as she took a step back from touring.

‘I don’t consider myself to have an addictive personality but I felt as though I did at one point have a gym addiction that was just not fun, I felt I had to go to the gym every single day,’ Ellie told The Sun.

‘I don’t know whether it was a survival thing, because touring was so tiring, so hard, really taxing on your body and your mental health.

‘I felt as though it was a survival instinct to be working out all the time, making sure I was super fit, super healthy and tried to counteract having drinks on tour and perhaps not eating very well.’

Last year, Ellie revealed she nearly quit music for good after 10 years of touring left her with crippling anxiety.

Ellie took a four-year hiatus after her 2015 album but Caspar, 28, helped her ‘rediscover’ her passion and create a healthy relationship with exercise.

Ellie said she saw ‘touring as real life’ but felt really ‘inspired by Caspar’s ‘amazing willpower and determination’.

But the singer, who married Caspar in a romantic ceremony last August, said she is tired of people asking when she they will have children’.

It comes after Ellie revealed rather than bringing ‘closure’ on her single years, getting married has given her a sense of new ‘independence’.

The singer discussed her marriage and career during an interview with #Legend, as she reaches the 10 year anniversary of her first album, Lights.

‘I found so much more happiness in myself without relying on another person. I’m married now, so you would think that would be the cue for me to be dependent on the other person, but actually I couldn’t feel more independent than I do right now.’

Ellie also added that their marriage has given her a feeling of confidence, saying: ‘It’s a strange paradox, because marriage seems as though it should give you some kind of closure for something. But I feel the opposite – it feels like a kind of freedom.’

As well as discussing her contentment with married life, Ellie also referenced more trying times as she discussed feeling like a ‘total mess’ in her twenties as she tried to start out in the music business.

She admitted: ‘Oh wow… you know, back then I was extremely curious. What’s the word for a total mess? I guess I was such a curious person, but I was very confused.’
