Deadmau5 issued a statement apologizing for using homophobic language on Twitch over the weekend, adding that his “hastily composed” non-apology after getting suspended from the streaming platform was “an insult to injury.”
In a statement shared on Reddit, the 38-year-old DJ (real name Joel Zimmerman) admitted his reaction to being shot at in the battle royale game PUBG — when he called another gamer a “f*cking c*ck-sucking stream sniper f*g” — was “stupid and insensitive,” insisting that he does not “hold those beliefs, at all.”
He wrote:
“ was all around an incredibly irresponsible and insensitive thing to say… Especially for someone who has a reach. What I said was incredibly stupid, and I don’t actually hold those beliefs, at all. I let some gamer get the best of me, and in that moment I completely lost control.”
The Ghosts N’ Stuff artist also apologized for the “knee-jerk post” he wrote after Twitch suspended him for violating its community guidelines that prohibit “hateful conduct,” which includes racist, sexist, and homophobic slurs.
In a now-deleted comment following his suspension, Zimmerman said he refused to apologize for the “harmless” remarks that were “intended to insult a f**king asshat who was being a f**king asshat,” adding:
“It wasn’t ‘directed at an entire group of people who have a sexual orientation that differs from my own’ f**k off with that s**t.”
But now that he’s had more time to think about it, the artist realized dismissing the hateful language as “gamer culture” made it “even worse.”
He continued:
“I know what I said was wrong, and my hastily composed non-apology was an insult to injury. I realize that trying to somewhat dismiss it as “gamer culture” was even worse. I don’t know why I did that. But I do know it was stupid and insensitive and I feel even more ashamed. This was my worst moment… me lashing back with some knee-jerk post about how it may have seemed unjustified… was completely unfair to twitch and its viewers. So I apologize for that as well.”
This isn’t the first time Zimmerman got caught using such language.
Last October, he came under fire for making homophobic and transphobic remarks in a “heated” moment, then, a month later, called the music of fellow EDM artist Slushii “seriously autistic s**t.”
Deadmau5 said he’s going to stay out of the spotlight until he learns to be a better person — and hopefully beef up his vocabulary.
