David Silva opens up on agony as baby son fought for his life

Manchester City star David Silva has opened up on the agony of son Mateo fighting for his life.

Mateo was born five months premature last December and his life was in real danger as he remained in Casa de Salud hospital.

Silva spent his time between Spain and England and helped City romp to the Premier League title.

He admits football was something of a release for him but says nothing could prepare him for seeing his son fighting for survival.

"Everyone has an image of a premature child but until you live it and experience it, you just don’t know how bad it is. It was obviously the toughest, most difficult period of my life. What’s going on in your private life and then trying to combine that with your working life," he told the Mail.

"Football was the thing that helped me the most. For that time I was out on the field, those 90 minutes, that was the only way, the only time I could forget stuff.

"For that short time, you’d enjoy the game for what it was but then, as soon as that is over, you’re back to thinking about everything again."

Mateo is now approaching his first birthday and Silva carried his son out onto the pitch at the Etihad earlier this season for the win over Huddersfield.

The Spaniard admits doing so was the best moment of his life and he even went on to crown it with a goal, scoring a stunning free-kick.

Silva will line up for Manchester City in the derby against United on Sunday and he admits "the balance in power has shifted" since his arrival in 2010.

"When I first got here, there was that huge respect for Manchester United, and now I think it is a little bit more the other way around," he adds.
