Coleen Rooney reveals ‘diva’ moment she took secret trip from Wayne’s 2006 World Cup championship in Germany after outing with Victoria Beckham and Cheryl Cole
Coleen Rooney secretly flew home from the 2006 World Cup in Germany to get her hair extensions done after they fell out.
After meeting up with her fellow WAGs including Victoria Beckham and Cheryl Cole in the town of Baden Baden, she was worried that her hair was starting to look like a ‘straggly mop’ so desperately tried to find a hairdresser nearby.
After failing to do so, Mrs Rooney decided that the only option was to jet back to Liverpool to have the extensions re-done.
Revealing the secret trip home as husband Wayne played for England, she said in her book, My Account: ‘For a big occasion like the World Cup a girl has to look her best, so before flying out for the tournament, I’d had new hair extensions put in. Now, I’m not generally high maintenance, day to day.
‘Now, I’d had extensions plenty of times before, but these were a bit of a faff because my usual hairdresser couldn’t do them and I’d had to find an alternative.

‘Not being great with make-up, my thinking was, at least my hair will look half decent while I’m there. Suffice to say, it didn’t go well. Almost as soon as I arrived in Germany, the hair pieces, sewn-in wefts of hair, started to fall out.
‘Desperate to fix things, I called everywhere, trying to find a hairdresser who could work with that kind of extension but no luck.
‘With no-one able to do it, all these terrible thoughts started going through my mind. With the world watching, I was about to go from having this lush long hair to a short straggly mop within a day. By then they were literally hanging out of my head, and I was bedside myself.’
Mrs Rooney, who was just 20 at the time, says she had no choice but to return home where Wayne’s cousin was able to sew the hair extensions back in.
She added: ‘In the end, I got a flight home to get my bloody hair done – leaving my mum, Claire and my brother in Germany. I know it sounds diva-isa and dramatic, but I got in such a flap about it; flying back to get it sorted seemed like the only way.
‘And we’re not talking private jet or anything extravagant like that; it was Ryanair all the way. When I got off the plane, I dashed straight home, where Wayne’s cousin Leanne, who did the extensions, met me. I sat down, she sewed my extensions back in, and I flew back to Germany on the next available flight. Panic over.
‘I never told anyone at the time – people must have wondered where the hell I’d disappeared to – but now you know.’
Mrs Rooney, now 37, was seen enjoying Baden Baden with the likes of Elen Rivas – Frank Lampard’s ex-fiancee, Lisa Roughead, who is married to Michael Carrick and Alex Gerrard – Steven Gerrard’s partner, during the competition.

However, afterwards the WAGs were blamed for England’s poor performance which saw them miss out on making the semi-finals.

Her husband Wayne had been sent off following a tangle with Ricardo Carvalho, and then clashing with Cristiano Ronaldo, who he’d shoved as he circled the referee.
She said: ‘The suggestion that we were a distraction to the platers and in some way responsible for England being knocked out of the tournament was ridiculous.’
