Cameron Monaghan Has Announced That He Is Also Leaving "Shameless"

I don’t know what Emmy Rossum and Cameron Monaghan are supposed to be looking at in this shot taken during the filming of Showtime’s Shameless. But I do know where their eyes are now, and that’s on anything besides a future Shameless script.

Entertainment Weekly says that Cameron Monaghan, aka the gay ginger son who (spoiler alert) turned out to not be Frank Gallagher’s biological child, announced on Instagram that he’s leaving the show for good. Cameron’s exit comes about six weeks after Emmy Rossum announced she’s leaving Shameless in its ninth season, and won’t be back in the event it was renewed for a tenth. Cameron’s exit is a swift one, as next Sunday’s 6th episode of the season, titled “Face It, You’re Gorgeous,” will be his last one ever. He and the crew knew he was done playing Ian Gallagher on the show since last year, but he decided to wait to drop the news on the rest of us.

I have been a series regular on this show for roughly ten years. I was the tender age of fifteen when we shot the pilot, and I came of age in so many ways, both legally and personally. I was very lucky to mature and grow with this show. Experiencing so many firsts, maturing as an actor, a professional, and a human. In the process gaining friends, family, and the best coworkers a very lucky actor could ask for, and for this I can be nothing but gracious. All good things come to an end. An old cliche, but one that rings true with a sincerity and clarity especially in moments like these. Everything ends. The next episode will be my last. I have known since last year, but I didn’t want to give it away too early as I wanted this season to be a surprise for the audience, allowing them to experience Ian’s unsure journey with his character. This role has been a joy to inhabit, a wild and special ride, and I’d like to thank #Shameless as well as you, the viewers, for being there with him. Goodbye, Ian Clayton Gallagher. We’ll meet again?

Cameron doesn’t say exactly why he decided to leave the show. It could be because he’s busy with other projects. Cameron currently plays the Joker-ish Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska brothers on Fox’s Gotham.

EW points out that Cameron’s departure will most likely fit in with his recent story arc. Over the past two seasons, Cameron’s Ian became known as “Gay Jesus” who fought against religious bigotry, with season nine opening with Ian in jail after setting a van on fire and pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. So it’s probably safe to say that Cameron’s character spends the next episode getting sentenced to 10-to-12 years in a prison that doesn’t allow outside visitors. Or worse – maybe Showtime pulls an HBO and kills Ian in a Chicago jail riot over some cheese and caramel popcorn bought from the commissary. But to be fair, I doubt Ian would fight over that; it sounds like something William H. Macy’s Frank Gallagher would cook up for the kids as a special treat after winning $5 on a scratch-off.
