Brooke Shields, 58, reveals she was rushed to ICU after she started ‘frothing at the mouth’ in terrifying seizure and how Bradley Cooper came to the rescue
Brooke Shields has revealed she was hospitalised in September after a terrifying seizure saw her ‘frothing at the mouth and go totally blue’.
The actress, 58, was days away from her Café Carlyle show debut when she collapsed ‘headfirst into the wall’ and started having a grand mal seizure outside the restaurant L’Artusi in New York.
Speaking for the first time about the frightening health scare, Brooke revealed Bradley Cooper rushed to her aid and held her hand in the ambulance as she was taken into intensive care.
Brooke said the grand mal seizure happened because she was drinking too much water for her show and was low in sodium.
‘I was waiting for an Uber. I get down to the bottom of the steps, and I start evidently looking weird, and [the people I was with] were like, “Are you okay?”, she told Glamour in the US Women Of The Year issue.

‘I walk into the restaurant L’Artusi, and I go to the sommelier who had just taken an hour to watch my run-through. I go in, two women come up to me; I don’t know them. Everything starts to go black.
‘Then my hands drop to my side and I go headfirst into the wall. I start having a grand mal seizure.
‘It means frothing at the mouth, totally blue, trying to swallow my tongue. The next thing I remember, I’m being loaded into an ambulance. I have oxygen on. And Bradley f*****g Cooper is sitting next to me holding my hand.’
Brooke said Bradley, 48, was called after the waiter at the restaurant was unable to get through to her husband Chris Henchy. An assistant knew Bradley was nearby and the Hollywood actor headed straight to L’Artusi.
‘His assistant called Bradley and said, “Brooke’s on the ground. Chris isn’t around. Go get her.” And he came, and somebody called the ambulance. And then it was like, I walked in with Jesus,’ she said.
Brooke described the ambulance journey as ‘surreal and odd’ with the actor telling her: ‘I’m going to hospital with you, Brooke’.
The actress and Bradley have friends for over a decade and became close after they starred together in the horror film The Midnight Meat Train in 2008.
Once in intensive care, Brooke said she felt ‘stuck’ after doctors put in a catheter and IV drip.

What is a grand mal seizure?
- A tonic-clonic seizure, previously known as a ‘grand mal’, is what most people think of as a typical epileptic fit.
- They happen in 2 stages – an initial tonic stage, shortly followed by a second clonic stage:
- The seizure normally stops after a few minutes, but some last longer.
- Afterwards, you may have a headache or difficulty remembering what happened and feel tired or confused.
