Boy George slams CPS for Caroline Flack assault charge after her sudden death

Boy George has attacked the Crown Prosecution Service for charging Caroline Flack with assaulting her boyfriend following her death today.

The Culture Club lead singer tweeted a scathing message in response to her tragic death while she was waiting to stand trial on March 4 for attacking Lewis Burton.

The 40-year-old Flack took her own life at her London home with her body found earlier today, her family confirmed in a statement.

Boy George, 58, whose real name is George O'Dowd, tweeted: "I hope all of you who attacked Caroline Flack even when her partner said he wanted no charges feel some sorrow today.

"This did not need to happen. This is devastating news! And yes, I hope the @cpsuk feel even deeper sorrow."

Caroline was charged assault by beating following an early-morning altercation but Lewis remained loyal by her side.

The case led to her stepping down as host of Love Island and being replaced by Irish presenter Laura Whitmore for the current winter run.

Despite the couple's dedication to each other they were forced to spend Valentine's Day apart as Caroline was banned from contacting Lewis.

Lewis Burton reportedly did not wish to 'press charges' against his girlfriend however the police make a charging decision in association with the CPS. 'Pressing charges' is a phrase that comes from the US judicial system.

Boy George's post has been retweeted more then 7,000 times and attracted comments from Twitter users who agree with him.

One wrote: "My thoughts exactly! This should NEVER have been taken to court. Her boyfriend didn’t even want to press charges. If she wasn’t a well know figure this would never have happened!!! I’m so sad, it’s such a terrible waste of a beautiful young women. RIP dear Caroline."

Another said: " It's UTTERLY DISGUSTING that the police were determined to prosecute a case where the VICTIM said there was no crime! That poor woman must have been going through hell. I feel so sorry for here family, friends and especially her boyfriend. Tragic."


A third replied: "Feel so sad , she was a beautiful woman a mainstay of our TV , this prosecution did not need to happen , RIP Caroline."

A lawyer for Caroline's devastated family confirmed the 40-year-old had taken her own life today at her London home.

"We can confirm that our Caroline passed away today on the 15th February," a spokesperson for Flack's family said.

"We would ask that the press both respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time."

Caroline began her television career back in 2001 when she appeared in TV movie Is Harry on the Boat?

She's had other acting jobs, in the likes of Bo' Selecta and in theatre, but it was in presenting that she became a huge star.

Caroline worked on shows including Fame Academy, I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! and its spin-off, Britain's Got More Talent and The X Factor.

But it's Love Island that brought her the most fame.

The CPS have been approached for a response.
