Behind the scenes of the VERY green BAFTAs

Behind the scenes of the VERY green BAFTAs: Lucrative goodie bags scrapped for sustainable ‘gifting wallets’, single-use plastic banned and a front row seat for eco warrior Joaquin Phoenix and his recycled suit

Sunday’s EE British Academy Film Awards have pledged to go carbon-neutral, ditching the usual lavish trappings of awards season.

The likes of Brad Pitt, Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie are all jetting in for the prestigious ceremony held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, but behind the scenes organisers are prepping for a very different ceremony to what the a-list are used to.

Organisers have announced that they are on a huge eco drive, banning single use plastic and even ditching the famously lucrative goodie bags stuffed with thousands of pounds of treats for nominees.

BAFTA goes green: Sunday’s EE British Academy Film Awards have pledged to go carbon-neutral, ditching the usual lavish trappings of awards season

Past years have see nominees and winners gifted a bag overflowing with goodies such as far-flung holidays, beauty products and booze but with environmental concerns in mind, Bafta chair and 1917 producer Dame Pippa Harris has revealed they’ve come up with an alternative treat for the celebs.

‘We traditionally have these big bags which have been filled with beauty products and big bottles of champagne and whatever,’ Dame Pippa told the PA news agency.

‘We felt that, in terms of transporting those around both before they are given to people and then the nominees have to lug them all the way back to America or wherever, that in and of itself was not a very sustainable thing to be doing.’

A-list attendees: Brad Pitt, Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie are jetting in for the ceremony held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, with the seating chart finalised on Thursday

Final touches: As organisers work out where to seat the Hollywood elite, it’s been revealed that the stars won’t be gifted their usual lucrative goodie bags thanks to an eco drive

Guests will instead be given a ‘gifting wallet,’ with Dame Pippa explaining: ‘It will have some nice things slotted into it, which will hopefully be just as exciting for people as a bottle of champagne would have been, but the whole thing is made from recycled plastic material and everything is very portable and is not going to be increasing anyone’s emissions if they are travelling with it.’

Single-use plastic will also be banned at the Baftas ceremony and branding that has not been re-used from previous years will be made using reclaimed and recyclable materials.

The a-list will be tucking into a dinner made of sustainably sourced food, including a vegan starter and pudding, following the lead of the 2020 Golden Globes, while encouraging guests to consider their travel choices, saying: ‘If they do have to fly, to offset their travel.’

Joaquin Phoenix has been the driving force between the 2020 awards season’s green drive.

Nominee and activist: Joaquin Phoenix has been the driving force between the 2020 awards season’s green drive and has been given a prime seat for this year’s BAFTAs

Cause: Joaquin used his Golden Globes acceptance speech earlier this month to praise the Hollywood Foreign Press for serving a vegan meal

Glad rags: BAFTA is doing their bit, encouraging Sunday’s guests, who also include Renee Zellweger and Margot Robbie, to wear sustainable fashion choices

According to Variety the actor pushed the Hollywood Foreign Press, who are behind the Golden Globes, to opt for a meat- and dairy-less meal at this month’s ceremony.

He used his acceptance speech for the Best Actor gong to praise the move, telling the crowd: ‘I would like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognising and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change. It’s a very bold move, making tonight plant-based.’

Joaquin proved that he was dedicated to the cause, as he left last week’s SAG Awards festivities early to attend a vigil for pigs at an LA slaughterhouse.

BAFTA is doing their bit, encouraging guests on Sunday to wear sustainable fashion choices, working with the London College of Fashion to create guidance for guests  including the suggestion that people might want to re-wear or hire garments.

Joaquin has already pledged to wear the same Stella McCartney suit to every awards show.

Big names: The a-list are turning out in force for the London ceremony, with Brad Pitt shown on the seating chart.

Joaquin has a prime, front row seat for this year’s BAFTAs, with images of the seating plan released on Thursday.

The Best Actor nominee is seated near Best Actress nominee Renee Zellweger, while Supporting Actor hopeful Brad Pitt is seated alongside his Once Upon A Time in Hollywood co-star Margot Robbie and Marriage Story’s Scarlett Johansson.

Other nominees confirmed to attend this year’s ceremony include Scarlett’s Marriage Story co-star Adam Driver, Little Women’s Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan and the film’s director Greta Gerwig.

Honouree: Andy Serkis will receive the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award

Presenters and other attendees confirmed to date include Fleabag’s Andrew Scott, Stars Wars favourite Daisy Ridley, Queen and Slim’s Daniel Kaluuya, Game of Throne’s Emilia Clarke and Oscar and BAFTA winner Olivia Colman.

Kathleen Kennedy will be honoured with the BAFTA Fellowship and Andy Serkis will receive the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award.

The EE British Academy Film Awards, hosted by Graham Norton, will take place on Sunday 2 February 2020 at the Royal Albert Hall.
