Look, things are bleak in #thesetryingtimes, and a certain sense of hopelessness in the face of powerful men making decisions that are contrary to the ideals of fairness, autonomy, and empathy we were once taught were the cornerstones of a democracy, is to be expected. Things are spiraling out of control and people are desperate to assert power over their own destinies, and to secure the R’hllor given rights of Jon Snow to sit on the Iron Throne over some stringy haired, hysterical woman who is clearly on her period. I’m assuming that’s what drove nearly 500,000 people to take time out of their workday and sign a Change.org petition calling for HBO to remake the entirety of Game Of Thrones’ 8th season. And I get it. I really do. What’s going on with Game Of Thrones is pretty much the only thing keeping me up at night these days too.
The extraordinarily well written and detailed petition leaves no doubt in my mind that the following is 100% feasible and a very good idea:
- Find new writers to carefully and surgically rewrite the aspects of season 8 that everybody can agree on.
- Rehire the entire cast and crew of thousands (sorry Kit, no role as the love interest in that Constance Wu/Katherine Heigl buddy cop comedy for you, not this year).
- Find Lena Headey a new Cersei wig identical to the one she burned, stomped on, and burned again.
- Re-shoot 10-12 hours of the most expensive TV show in history.
The blueprint is laid out there in the petition, all HBO has to do is decide which side of history it wants to be on.
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on.
This series deserves a final season that makes sense.
Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!
I applaud Dylan D, the creator of this petition, for his bravery, courage, and moral fortitude in the face of the tyranny of two dudes with a bad case of senioritis. If we don’t speak up now, who knows where we’ll find ourselves in the future. Plus imagine sitting with your grandkids, telling them how you once stood up for the rights of all mankind (and womankind!) to do a big GOT re-watch without fear of a being disappointed with the final season like you were back on those darkest of days, the spring of 2019.
