Days before he was arrested by ICE agents, 21 Savage tweaked the lyrics of his song “A Lot” during a performance on “The Tonight Show” to reflect the experience of immigrants in America.
Appearing on the late-night talk show last week, the 26-year-old altered the end of his verse on the “I Am > I Was” track to express solidarity with immigrants and other disenfranchised groups in America.
In the “Tonight Show” version of the song, 21 rapped (via XXL), “Started from the bottom straight from the gutter, so I had to go a lil’ harder/The lights was off, the gas was off, so we had to boil up the water/Been through some things so I can’t imagine my kids stuck at the border/Flint still need water/People was innocent, couldn’t get lawyers.”
While the song is slightly different from the version that appeared on the album’s initial release, which featured a verse from J. Cole, the lines that 21 rapped on “The Tonight Show” also feature in the track’s music video, according to XXL.
The rapper, whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Atlanta early Sunday morning.
The agency alleges that 21 Savage, who has been associated with Atlanta and its vibrant rap scene since his 2016 breakthrough ,is actually a UK citizen who has been living in the country illegally since overstaying his visa in 2006.
Shortly after news of his arrest broke, the rapper’s lawyer told TMZ that the whole situation was a mix-up, and “[working] with work with authorities to clear up any misunderstanding.”
