Foundations can be pretty hit or miss for me. I prefer a more luminous finish, but I also have oily skin and acne and dark marks, so I need a formula with a bit more coverage. That is a hefty order for any foundation to fill, and I often find myself having to compromise on one aspect that I like in order to get another when shopping for new products.
When scrolling on Instagram one day, I came across a Story by makeup artist Noor Farooq, who was raving about the Kosas Revealer Skin-Improving Foundation ($42). Farooq, who also prefers a luminous skin finish, said that the foundation had incredible coverage and did not look cakey or sit on top of the skin like some heavier formulas. Curious, I went on TikTok to see if others had also tried the foundation, and I spent hours scrolling through reviews that all had the same conclusion: this foundation is incredible. I had to try it for myself.
While it comes in 36 shades, right off the bat, I had trouble finding a color that suited my skin tone. I didn’t let this deter me, as this happens with most foundations in general. I ended up choosing the shades medium deep neutral 320 and deep neutral 380 to mix a custom color. After some experimenting, I found that one full pump of medium deep neutral 320 and a half pump of deep neutral 380 gave me a really great color match, so that’s the formula I stuck with to test the foundation on my full face.
The foundation comes in a glass bottle, which gave it some weight and a more “expensive” feel. Using my color concoction, I put the mixture on the back of my hand and buffed it out on my face with my Nyx Can’t Stop Won’t Stop Foundation Brush ($15).
Immediately I could see what all the hype was about. The formula felt lightweight on application, and the coverage, while not full in my opinion, was still a beautiful medium finish that did manage to cover a few dark spots on my cheeks and above my lip.
Overall, this foundation exceeded my expectations. The way it covered my blemishes while still feeling lightweight on my face and lending my skin the prettiest, most luminous finish should be a model for every foundation launch in the future. With 36 shades, the shade range is fairly standard, but it jumps around quite a bit and misses the ability to properly address undertones.
Despite that, now that I’ve found my magic mixture, I will be adding this product to my permanent makeup rotation — and it has definitely placed itself in the running to become my holy-grail foundation.
