Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, visited Paddington Recreation Ground for an appearance with the Sayers Croft Trust Forest School this morning—marking her first official royal engagement after her maternity leave. While we loved her casual outfit choice—a cargo jacket, jeans, and boots—what we couldn’t take our eyes off was her fresh new haircut.
Fans quickly took to social media to praise Middleton’s shorter, sleeker new chop. Her new hair looks a few inches shorter than when we last saw her, with some layers and lighter highlights added in for extra bounce and shine. Even with gusts of wind blowing her new style around, Middleton’s sleek waves looked flawless—as always.
Adding a few face-framing layers is one of the easiest ways to upgrade your haircut without losing a ton of length. Plus, layers help take bulk and weight out of the hair, which is particularly useful if you like to style it in waves or curls like Middleton. Your hair will have more bounce and hold a curl better when it’s not all one length.
The Duchess’s last official event was at the end of March when she attended the Commonwealth Games in London with her husband William. She gave birth to their third child, Prince Louis Arthur Charles, on April 23. But Middleton wasn’t out of the spotlight throughout her entire maternity leave. She made public appearances at Trooping the Colour, Prince Louis’ Christening, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding, where she wore her slightly darker hair down and in loose waves.
She also made an appearance in July with Meghan and Prince William for the Wimbledon finals, since she’s a royal patron of the tournament.
