Emma was joined on the red carpet by co-stars Mark Ruffalo, 56, and Willem Dafoe, 68, who were both dressed in smart suits.
The actress’s sensational turn as the uninhibited Bella Baxter in Poor Things – which has already seen her nominated for a Golden Globe – has her as a favourite to be named Best Actress for the second time, after La La Land in 2017.
Yargos Lanthimos, who also directed The Favourite with Olivia Colman, is also expected to be nominated for his wildly original film.
The picture contains over a dozen explicit sex scenes and a huge amount of foul language.
An anti-Poor Things whispering campaign started shortly after its emergence on the festival circuit, with some saying that the use of the word ‘retard’ early on in the movie is problematic.
Likewise Stone’s depiction of Bella in the initial period, after her brain has been swapped with that of her unborn baby.
The actress’s nearest competition for the best actress Oscar will likely be Annette Bening, 65, whose new film Nyad also premiered in Telluride.
The movie tells the story of marathon swimmer Diana Nyad, who swam from Cuba to Florida at the age of 64. Bening, Oscar-nominated four times but never a winner, would be a sentimental favourite.

Men in the trailer are perplexed by Bella’s eccentric behaviour, with Baxter explaining that ever since he brought her back to life, her head and body haven’t been in sync.
Stone noted in a Bella feature from Searchlight Pictures that, ‘The more autonomous Bella becomes, the more challenged men seem to be by it.’
