Best value supermarket for every Christmas dinner item named – it’s not Aldi

Supermarkets each have their offering of Christmas dinner ingredients, ranging from juicy turkeys, roast potatoes and parsnips all the way to mince pies.

While one budget retailer topped the chart as the cheapest place to do the festive food shop, another came out on top as the “tastiest” provider.

Results from a price comparison done by Which? in November crowned Aldi as the most affordable while Waitrose won Good Housekeeping’s annual taste test.

But for those that want both quality and affordability, there are a plethora of cheaper alternatives to Waitrose’s luxury offering.

Express.co.uk has rounded up the best value supermarket to get every ingredient for your Christmas dinner with no trimming spared.

Some may assume that middle-of-the-range retailers like Tesco and Sainsbury’s are always the ones to go to for value and top-tier flavours, but it’s simply not the case according to Good Housekeeping’s taste test.

Turkey

Tesco’s Faff-free Two Bird Ballotine shared the top spot of the taste test but cost just £39 compared to Waitrose’s £60-£90 alternative, the Medium Free-Range Bronze Feathered Whole Turkey with Giblets.

Vegetarian centrepiece

Tesco took home first place for its vegetarian offering – Finest Roasted Butternut Spinach & Sage Galette (£7).

Aldi had the best vegan option and even outranked Waitrose with its Specially Selected Vegan Festive Wreath (£4.99).

Pigs in blankets

Asda came second to Sainsbury’s in the taste test with their ASDA Extra Special Pigs in Blankets (£3.25).

Those who want to spend an extra £1 can buy the winning side dish, Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Proper Pigs in Blankets for £4.25.

Roast potatoes

Morrisons came second to Waitrose for their Morrisons The Best Goose Fat Roast Potatoes, £2.99.

This is just a fraction of the price of the Waitrose version, which cost £4.50 for the same 800g weight.

Canapes

No Christmas would be complete without small plates, and Asda is the place to go for them, according to Good Housekeeping.

The Asda Scallop & Prawn Vol au Vents with Spiced Rum & Brown Butter Sauce (£7.50) outbid Marks and Spencer for its offering of festive “picky bits”.

Yule log

Amazon Fresh customers will be pleased to know that it does the best chocolate yule log for just £5, specifically the Our Selection by Amazon Chocolate Yule Log.

It came first in front of the Co-op Irresistible Chocolate Yule Log which cost the same.

Christmas pudding

Asda stole the top spot from Waitrose for Christmas pudding as well as small plates, with their Extra Special Six-month Matured Jewelled Topped Christmas Pudding (£12).

Mince Pies

While this frozen food retailer was absent in the top spot of all other categories, Iceland was crowned the winner of the mince pie round.

The Good Housekeeping taste-testers voted their Luxury 6 All Butter Mince Pies (£2.50) as the tastiest, and incidentally, the most affordable.
