Favouring sleek silhouettes in flattering shades, the Princess of Wales, once voted the best dressed royal, certainly knows what suits her.

And while Kate’s been known to buy the same outfit in two colours – her Coronation dress, for example, was a copy of an Alexander McQueen style she had already worn – there’s one look that works so well that the royal owns it in four colours. 

Named after the Princess of Wales, the item of clothing in question is British-based and New Zealand-born designer Emilia Wickstead’s ‘Kate’ dress, which the royal has in lavender, cobalt blue, olive green and teal. 

Long-sleeved and belted at the waist, the bespoke A-line dresses differ only slightly in length. 

While the teal version that Kate was seen in yesterday when she welcomed the Queen of Sweden to Windsor Castle is a midi, the other three fall to the knee.

Three of the four – the lavender, the blue and the teal – feature a beateau neckline, while the olive green dress has a square neckline. 

Wickstead’s ‘Kate’ dress was previously available to buy in pink, red and navy for £1,350, but is no longer on sale.  

Kate, aged 41, was first spotted in the lavender version in October 2018 when she attended the Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit in London.

Less than a year later, Kate debuted an olive green version of the designer gown to open the Anna Freud Centre in London.

In November 2019, she wore the cobalt blue dress to attend the launch of the National Emergencies Trust. 

For that occasion Kate added some sparkle in the form of Princess Diana’s dazzling diamond and sapphire earrings, which complemented the dress perfectly. 

Yesterday’s meet-and-greet with the Queen of Sweden and her husband came just before Kate and King Charles were identified by media organisations around the world, including the Guardian and the Times, as the two royals alleged to have expressed ‘concerns’ about the colour of Prince Archie’s skin, following the inclusion of their names in the Dutch translation of Omid Scobie’s book Endgame.

British designers Alexander McQueen and Jenny Packham are also among Kate’s favourites, and the Princess of Wales has also been seen in different versions of their designs.

Eagle-eyed fans may have spotted that the Alexander McQueen gown that Kate wore to the Coronation is almost identical to one the royal already owns.

The British fashion house has long been one of the Princess of Wales’ top designers – with the royal even selecting their Creative Director Sarah Burton to design her wedding dress in 2011.

In December 2019, the then Duchess of Cambridge wore a black version of her Coronation gown to attend a reception for members of the Diplomatic Corps at Buckingham Palace.

For this occasion, Kate wore her show-stopping gown with the Lover’s Knot tiara, her Royal Victorian Order’s badge and the accompanying blue sash.

Less than 24 hours before King Charles’ Coronation, Kate Middleton joined the monarch and Prince William to surprise royal fans who had lined The Mall outside Buckingham Palace.

To meet with members of the public, the royal opted for a slim-fitting midi dress which was custom-made for her by UK designer Jenny Packham and featured a black velvet belt.

The mother-of-three had also worn the exact same dress but in black to greet mourning royal fans outside Windsor Castle with Prince William and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in September 2022.

For that sombre day, the Princess kept her accessories minimal and simply wore a pair of black tights and suede heels.
