Alan Fletcher has revealed that he’s been given a ‘new lease’ while working on the new and improved Neighbours series, due to a multitude of different dynamics.
The actor, who plays Karl Kennedy, spoke to Metro.co.uk about the ‘bigger’ and ‘better’ revival of the popular soap, revealing that it’s given him the opportunity to do things he’d never got to do previously.
Karl, as viewers know, has been the subject of Susan’s (Jackie Woodburne) frustration in the opening week of the Amazon Freevee episodes, with past mistakes coming back to haunt the couple in a big way.
We’ve already seen a number of incredible scenes between the two, with fans applauding Alan and Jackie for their powerhouse performances. Alan told us that working with Jackie is his ‘safe place’, and that when it’s just the two of them, they can ‘do the work’ they’re used to doing.
But while Karl and Susan are sparring just like the good old days, fans can also expect to see the iconic characters interacting with a host of other Ramsay Street favourites in upcoming episodes.
‘What’s been interesting is that Jackie and myself have been absent from the programme for little periods of time that were pre-arranged,’ Alan told us.
‘There was nothing much we could do about that, so it means that we’ve both worked without the other, which has actually been fun and refreshing in a strange way because suddenly I’ve got a chance to explore Karl’s relationship with other characters in a way I wouldn’t normally do.
‘It’s given me a new lease.’
One character who fans can expect Karl to interact heavily with is Harold Bishop (Ian Smith), with the doctor set to grow increasingly concerned about his old friend’s wellbeing in scenes which Alan describes as ‘intensely personal’.
‘The material we’ve got with Ian [Smith] this time around, it follows on from the previous incarnation,’ he said. ‘It’s given Ian an opportunity to show what a fine dramatic actor he is because we always think of Harold as being a comic character.
‘It’s been intensely personal scenes and, for Karl, what’s going on in his life is starting to resonate more with him because he’s getting older and beginning to feel the perils of old age.’
Neighbours streams on Amazon Freevee with new episodes dropping Mondays to Thursdays at 7am
