‘Extraordinary’ ancient Aztec objects ‘never before seen’ found in lost pyramid

Lost Pyramids of the Aztecs explores the wiping out of the Aztecs

The Aztecs are today revered around the world, despite their civilisation having been gone for hundreds of years.

They were at one point in history the most advanced humans on the planet, leading the way in science and medicine, building great cities for hundreds of thousands of people in jungle and desert landscapes across Mexico.

Many of their cities contained complex irrigation systems that wouldn’t be seen anywhere else in the world for hundreds of years.

But, when Europeans arrived in the Americas in the early 16th century, the Aztecs were obliterated and erased from memory.

Among the ancient cities that have since been poured over by archaeologists is Teotihuacan, a place that turned up a great deal of beautiful and mystifying objects found inside a forgotten pyramid.

The discoveries, within the Pyramid of the Sun, were explored during Discovery’s short documentary, ‘Shocking Artefacts And Human Remains Found In 2,000 Year Old Pyramid’.

Inside, archaeologists unveiled a tunnel embedded inside the bedrock, initially thinking it was a natural cave.

On further investigation, however, a man-made chamber was found, and beyond it the remnants of 17 thick carved-out walls.

The walls were built to block access to the tunnel, and at the end of the shaft, an elaborate chamber had been chiselled into the shape of a clover.

Today the tunnel lies empty, stripped of its contents most likely by robbers over the centuries.

It wasn’t the last researchers would find inside the newly discovered tunnel system, however: in 2017, Mexican archaeologist Sergio Gómez uncovered another secret tunnel under the Feathered Serpent pyramid.

This newly established tunnel was untouched by thieves, and Sergio and his team found more than 100,000 different objects along its paths.

“[They are] extraordinary objects, some of them never seen before in any Mexican archaeological exploration,” he said.

It is believed that many of the relics had been untouched for as long as 1,800 years, lying in the exact places they had been placed as offerings to the gods.

Among them, a greenstone copy set of crocodile teeth, crystals worked into the shape of eyes, and sculptures of animated jaguars.

At the heart of the pyramid, excavations revealed a darker secret: the remains of a number of humans.

Anthropologist Saburo Sugiyama examined the myriad bones unearthed from the ancient city of Teotihuacan, and explained: “Human bones tell us a lot of things: male, female, how many years they had when they died, how they lived, how they died.”

He said the bones could be evidence of a gruesome sacrifice, the biggest indicator coming from the way in which the bones were found, arranged in what looks like a “symbolic pattern”.

In total, over 260 bodies were found to be built into the foundations of the pyramid, the narrator noting that “the pyramid is a mass grave”.
