‘I went to a festival that started as a barbecue and even rain didn’t dampen it’

Having grown up in Hertfordshire, I had heard of the music festival Standon Calling and this year I decided to take a visit with my family and I definitely don't regret it.

The annual music festival is held near the village of Standon in Hertfordshire and has only grown since it began as a birthday barbecue for the founder Alex Trenchard in 2001.

This year the festival had an epic line-up with The Human League, Scouting For Girls, Rick Astley and Mel C to name just a few.

There was a huge range of entertainment over the full four days at the event and that meant it was easy to keep yourself busy during the day – including morning yoga sessions, hot tub hire, plenty of bars, a comedy tent, and some family games.

I downloaded the lineup app before we arrived which helped us to keep track of who was on where and when although we did still rely on the boards around the site as well.

Thursday evening was fantastic, after I arrived and set up my tent I went for a walk around the festival and soaked up the atmosphere and I loved it.

Then I went to watch some of the music, and unlike some of the other crowded at music festivals it was very much tailored to families and the audience was respectful of your space.

My favourite day of the event was Friday but this could be due to the fact that Scouting For Girls were playing, one of my favourite bands.

Unfortunately for campers on Saturday we suffered with some typical British weather and it rained all day long.

Even though some tents may have been damp, spirits were definitely not and we still enjoyed a day of partying and visited some of the Fairground rides.

On Sunday the sun came out and some of our friends headed to the onsite restaurant for a slap up meal which they highly recommended.

Overall it has been one of my favourite festival experiences and I highly recommend it to locals in the area – it was perfect for me as each morning I headed home for a shower and a nap.

Standon Calling is not one to be missed and I will definitely be returning next year.
