Coronation Streetstar James Craven has officially confirmed his permanent exit from the soap following an emotional storyline that saw his character Aaron Sandiford finally leave the cobbles during Friday night’s episode.
Speaking about his departure, actor James said: "It's obviously very sad", as he discussed leaving his character behind and moving on to new things.
James first joined the soap in April 2022, playing mechanic Aaron Sandiford who worked at Webster’s Autocentre, and became the centre of a difficult consent storyline when his character raped friend Amy Barlow after she passed out beside him after drinking.
Following the harrowing scenes, Amy turned to alcohol to numb her pain, before dropping her allegations against Aaron when she realised it would cost Tracy and Steve their business to pay for the legal fees.
The storyline was an important representation of consent, and culminated in Aaron leaving Weatherfield during Friday’s episode.
Speaking about the storyline and his character’s departure, James shared that he did wish his character had admitted to what he'd done, but the unfortunate reality was that the way the storyline played out was quite realistic, as so many cases in real life end without prosecution or justice for victims.
James also revealed that he never wanted Aaron to get away with what he did, but knew his character would have to live with knowing what he did.
Although he’s disappointed his character didn’t get his comeuppance, James is proud of the way the storyline was handled. Speaking about tackling the storyline, he said he knew as soon as they started that it was going to be a positive one in the long run, and hoped it gave the fans a new way of looking at situations surrounding consent.
With so much work going into the storyline not just from James, but from the entire Corrie cast and crew, James is proud such an emotional and important storyline was tackled, and was even prouder still having played a part in its telling.
Despite his character’s difficult storyline, James admitted he’d had an incredible time working on the show, and raved about his co-stars and friends he made on set. He said: "It’s obviously very sad, it's been a lot of fun and I’ve really, really loved my time there.
"I met so many great people and I've made so many good friends for life. But I'm excited, I'm really, really excited to get on and go on and do other things."
As for what’s next, James hinted at some exciting new projects coming up, but said he couldn't reveal much more about what the future has in store for him just yet.
