After years of waiting, WhatsApp is finally releasing an update that will let its billions of users edit messages after they’ve been sent. Yes, you’ll soon be fix typos, add emojis and tweak a chat if you suddenly have a change of heart about what you’ve said. It could save some serious embarrassment and put an end to family arguments but there is a catch.
Once a message has been sent, WhatsApp is only giving users 15 minutes to change their minds or make changes. After that time has run out the chat is locked and no further updates can be made. Recipients will also see the word ‘Edited’ posted alongside the chat so they know things have been updated.
“For the moments when you make a mistake, or simply change your mind, you can now edit your sent messages,” WhatsApp said in a post on its blog. “From correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message, we’re excited to bring you more control over your chats.”
So how does it work and when will you get it on your phone?
WhatsApp says both Android and iPhone users will get the changes with it rolling out globally in the coming weeks. Once the update arrives on your device, you simply need to long-press on a sent message and choose ‘Edit’ from the menu to begin changing things. Then just tap the send button again.
This latest comes after WhatsApp users were treated to another update called Chat Lock last week.
The upgrade keeps things hidden from view and only accessible via additional security such as Apple’s Face ID, 4-digit pin code or the phone’s fingerprint scanner.
Once you assign a chat to the locked folder, messages can only be seen after you have verified yourself – that should mean nobody else gets to read them without you knowing.
