Swedish company’s tiny ‘Ikea’ flat pack car is eco-friendly bargain – at £8,000

A Swedish car company is turning its new electric vehicle into an IKEA-style flat-pack allowing incredibly low prices as well as a smaller carbon footprint

Retail giant IKEA revolutionised the world of furniture by selling beds, wardrobes and even complete kitchens as flat packs.

Now another company from Sweden is using the same trick – but for cars. Luvly has created a method to reduce the shipping costs of its eco-friendly electric car.

The nimble little two-seater measures nine feet in length, five feet in width and just under five feet in height. It retails at €10,000 (around £8,000).

The Luvly 0 city car is shipped as a kit – not only keeping costs lower but reducing the eco-vehicle’s carbon footprint even further by squeezing 20 Luvly cars into a standard=sized shopping container that could only accommodate four fully-assembled cars.

The car’s 6.4 kilowatt battery is divided into two sections for ease of charging, and promises a range of around 60 miles between charges.

The futuristic-looking little car can reach a top speed of around 55mph, which is ample for inner-city use.

The company promises that despite the car’s small size it’s packed with safety features: “We take safety seriously, that’s why we've created a technical solution that's light on weight but heavy on protection".

"Luvly vehicles are built like formula racing cars," the company's press release says, "with energy absorbers and a sandwich composite safety shell protecting the passengers. This technology offers by far the best passive safety compared with any comparable vehicle. Luvly vehicles contribute to safer urban traffic, as alternatives to multi-tonne cars".

Of course, there safety concerns come to the fore when it comes to a car that comes in kit form.

We’ve all had a Billy bookcase come apart on us – it’s a whole other problem if your front wheels come off while you’re racing along a dual carriageway.

So the people at Luvly are setting up regional mini-factories that will put your car together for you. The super-compact Luvly 0 is set to be followed by several other models including a three-wheeled sports car, and a small van.
