Sharron Davies boycotts Nike as trans influencer given sports bra deal

Sharron Davies boycotts Nike over Dylan Mulvaney ads

On Thursday, TikTok star Dylan Mulvaney, 26, shared some snaps with her 1.7 million followers on Instagram donning some of Nike’s womenswear, revealing her new partnership with the brand.

However, last night Sharron Davies, 60, who won a silver medal for Team GB in the 400m individual medley at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, declared she’s boycotting the brand because of the deal.

The women’s rights campaigner shared with GB News: “It’s so frustrating. We take two steps forward with World Athletics and Swim England protecting women’s sport and then this happens.

“It feels like a parody of what women are. In the past it was always seen as an insult when people said, ‘Run like a girl’.”

Referring to Dylan, Sharron added: “Here we’ve got someone behaving in a way that’s very unsports-like, very unathletic.

“It’s just so frustrating when only one per cent of the US sponsorship dollar in the whole of the USA goes to actual females in sports. That they would then do this seems like a kick in the teeth.”

The retired swimmer emphasised that “physiology makes so much difference”, indicating that her biggest grievance was the fact that Dylan is promoting Nike’s women’s wear range but has not had gender reassignment surgery.

Dan Wooton, who was presenting the GB News show, noted a different point of contention, noting: “The thing that makes me sick about the Dylan Mulvaney thing is Dylan Mulvaney isn’t an athlete” and warned that “Nike should be very careful”.

Sharron added: “We can protest, it’s what left for us at the moment because nobody really seems to be listening. The only way we can make these companies and governments listen is to boycott with our wallet.”

Recently, Dylan has come under fire not just for her Nike sponsorship but received some backlash after partnering with beer brand Bud Light for their March Madness campaign, with many sharing the sentiments of Mattmargolis in the comments section who wrote: “Men don’t want to see a dude wearing a dress representing their beer.”

However, on social media the influencer has been receiving unbridled support from her fanbase, as they fended off the critics.

Under her Nike post, which has since received over 300,000 likes, Cieranmorrow joked: “Was looking forward to the conservatives trying to cancel Nike, but I forgot they already did that. Keep up the good work, girl.”

Meanwhile, in the comments section of her Bud Light clip, Dylan’s fans took aim at some of the critics directly, as Oochie_boochies added to the discourse saying: “I don’t even drink Budlight, but I may just have to start – what is wrong with big brands supporting the LGBTQ+ community? They need all the support with all the hate in the world.

“I have been a woman almost 45 years and I could give af if Dylan gets all the damn sponsorships. She deserves it all, it is not easy going through a transition and I applaud her. WAY TO GO DYLAN!!!!”
