Daylight Saving Time was created so people could save energy costs during World War I, and now, more than a century later, medical professionals and parents agree: this “springing forward” and “falling back” nonsense has got to stop. As it is, the topic of sleep is a major stressor in their life as they try to get their kids to sleep so they can hopefully catch some Z’s themselves. That’s why parents have been bracing themselves for Daylight Saving Time to go into effect this past weekend and once again interrupt childrens’ sleep schedules.
Shawn Johnson East just shared Instagram reel that is even more relatable on the Monday after DST. In the video titled “parents the morning after getting 3 hours of sleep,” Johnson enters the kitchen wrapped in a blanket. Her husband Andrew East turns around shirtless and hands his defeated-looking wife a mug of coffee.
The video then jumps to the infamous clip of then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi from a press conference the day after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
“There’s no point in saying good morning,” Pelosi said, “’cause it certainly is not one.”
We feel you, Shawn, we feel you. And it’s only going to be worse until we get used to this clock-changing jet lag.

And we weren’t the only ones.
“Real talk. Foreal foreal. 👏👏,” one commenter said.
“I feel this so much ugh 😩,” said another.
“Lack of sleep is definitely one of the hardest parts about parenting little ones 😅,” another said. “I felt half human during those months/years!”
Hopefully the Olympic gold medalist and her former NFL player husband can tire their kids — Drew, 3 and Jett, 1 — before bedtime tonight. The sweet family of four is known for impromptu gymnastics classes and handstand challenges.
SheKnows sat down with Johnson for an exclusive interview in Jan. 2023, and she got super honest about the hardest part about being a mom. And yes, sleep deprivation is definitely up there, but Johnson’s number one is navigating the mom guilt that comes with not doing things perfectly. In 2023, she is trying to leave that gnawing stress and self-doubt behind.
“I just kinda want to live in the moment and just do my best every single day that I can — whatever threshold that is — and leave the rest behind,” she said.
Of course, that threshold gets higher and higher the later the kiddos sleep in and the more coffee her husband. And if this week is simply filled with snuggles and screentime, you won’t find any judgement over here! If anything, we’re kind of jealous.
