Austin Butler looked crestfallen as he lost out on the Best Actor gong to Brendan Fraser at Sunday’s Critics’ Choice Awards – days after the death of Lisa Marie Presley.
The Elvis leading man, 31, appeared stoic when Fraser was announced as winner at the show, which came just three days after the shocking death of his friend Lisa Marie Presley at 54.
Lisa Marie had been on hand to cheer on the Anaheim, California native when he collected a Golden Globe award last Tuesday, just two days before her death at a Los Angeles-area hospital Thursday.
Stoic: Austin Butler looked crestfallen as he lost out on the Best Actor gong to Brendan Fraser at Sunday’s Critics’ Choice Awards – days after the death of Lisa Marie Presley
Some users on Twitter shared their interpretations of the blank reaction Butler had to Fraser’s victory, with one writing, ‘Oh Austin Butler is not happy.’
Another said Butler was ‘completely unable to hide how mad’ he was in missing out on the honor in a neck and neck award season race opposite Fraser, who has been lauded for his performance in The Whale.
Others took to his defense citing the sadness Butler is experiencing in the wake of Lisa Marie’s death, as one user said, ‘He is grieving Lisa Marie’s death, be kind.’
Another said, ‘He just lost his close friend in Lisa Marie – cut him some slack if he doesn’t look happy tonight,’ while another noted that ‘his mind and heart are elsewhere’ days after Lisa Marie’s tragic passing.

Following Lisa Marie’s death Thursday, Butler said he’d ‘forever cherish’ his experiences with Lisa Marie when he was working on the Baz Luhrmann biopic of her father, and that his ‘heart is completely shattered’ following her death.
‘My heart is completely shattered for Riley, Finley, Harper and Priscilla at the tragic and unexpected loss of Lisa Marie,’ Butler said in a statement. ‘I am eternally grateful for the time I was lucky enough to be near her bright light and will forever cherish the quiet moments we shared.
‘Her warmth, her love and her authenticity will always be remembered.’

‘Over the last year, the entire Elvis movie family and I have felt the privilege of Lisa Marie’s kind embrace,’ he said. ‘Her sudden, shocking loss has devastated people all around the world.
‘I know her fans everywhere join me in sharing prayers of love and support with her [family] … Lisa Marie, we will miss your warmth, your smile, your love.’

In his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes after winning Best Actor, Motion Picture Drama, Butler thanked Lisa Marie and Priscilla Presley for their support amid the making of the motion picture
Lisa Marie and Priscilla Presley were emotional in taking in Butler’s win at the Globes last week
In his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes after winning Best Actor, Motion Picture Drama, Butler thanked Lisa Marie and Priscilla Presley for their support amid the making of the motion picture.
‘I also want to thank … the Presley family, thank you guys, thank you for opening your hearts, your memories, your home to me,’ he said. ‘Lisa Marie, Priscilla, I love you forever.’
He also raised eyebrows by still speaking in Elvis’ Memphis drawl – two years after the Anaheim-born star finished filming on the biopic.
Speaking with Extra host Billy Bush, ahead of the Golden Globes, Lisa Marie said that she thought Butler, in his performance as Elvis, had nailed the ‘characteristics [and] the talking without doing it like in a caricature way like it’s been done in the past’.
She added: ‘It’s kind of done in sort of a funny, joking way, the way [Elvis] spoke, but Austin actually got it and did it perfectly without making it comical.’
