The Age asked prominent Victorians to reveal their favourite places and activities of the summer holiday season. Today’s instalment comes from Hawthorn premiership footballer Robert DiPierdomenico, who can’t get enough of the beach.

What does a Victorian summer mean to you?
Summer for me is a great time as I get to do what I love and that is
everything beach. This could be in a boat or bodysurfing or lying on
the sand. I love taking people to explore the peninsula, which is my
backyard. Golf, wineries, little historic towns such as Flinders, back-
or front-beach fishing and swimming, and taking out my brother’s Couta
boat.
Favourite place?
Beautiful Bushrangers Bay.Credit:Michael Fowler
There’s a beach called Bushrangers Bay that is a great 45-minute walk
from Cape Schanck lighthouse. It has stunning rock pools to explore,
or take a picnic, or after your walk just laze on the sand and watch
the waves roll in.
Favourite summer food?
When it comes down to summer food you just can’t beat a barbecued
sausage in bread. How good! Actually, anything on the barbecue will do it.
(Working on my show Dippers backyard BBQ wars means I’m up with the
trendy tricks!)
Smell of summer?
Summer is … the aroma of the barbecue.Credit:istock
When I get a whiff of sunscreen, a deep breath of the fresh, salty
ocean air and whatever is on the barbecue cooking.
Favourite summer song?
Sailing by Rod Stewart. Nothing better than putting the boat in at 4am
at Rye pier to go fishing with mates.
Worst thing about summer?
Well, the worst thing about summer is when it ends or, in the case of
this year, it doesn’t start!
Guilty pleasure?

Having a Sorrento vanilla slice every day, taking my shorts off and
swimming naked when I’m alone in the water and playing old records at
full blast.
