Elon Musk has launched into a strange argument on Twitter with a high-brow US politician and a famous Hollywood actor over Twitter verification.

Musk told Dark Waters star Mark Ruffalo that “not everything that [representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] says is 100 per cent accurate,” in a discussion about Musk’s decision to make verified users pay £7 per month for a blue tick.

Ruffalo, 54, known for his leading role as Hulk, took to Twitter to plead with the platform’s new owner for a rethink in his approach.

He said: “Elon. Please—for the love of decency—get off Twitter, hand the keys over to someone who does this as an actual job, and get on with running Tesla and SpaceX.”

Replying to the Spotlight actor, Musk said: “Hot take: not everything AOC says is 100% accurate”.

Musk has taken over Twitter with promises of increased free speech, but has ruffled feathers after sacking the social media platform’s board of directors, around 3,700 of its staff and promised wholesale changes to the app itself.

He has also said he wants to remove the platform’s left-wing bias.

Musk’s move to charge for the lauded blue tick comes as part of efforts to earn extra revenue for the social media giant.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, House of Representatives Democrat and prominent left-wing voice, was outraged by Musk’s move.

“Lmao at a billionaire earnestly trying to sell people on the idea that ''free speech'' is actually a $8/mo subscription plan”, she said.

Unphased by influential people disagreeing with him, Musk replied: “Your feedback is appreciated, now pay $8.”

The row between Musk and Ocasio-Cortez seems to have gotten personal, however.

On Thursday (November 3) she said: “Also, my Twitter mentions/notifications conveniently aren't working tonight, so I was informed via text that I seem to have gotten under a certain billionaire's skin”.

Cuttingly, she then added: “Just a reminder that money will never buy your way out of insecurity, folks.”

Musk still wasn’t bothered though, hitting back with “Trash me all day, but it'll cost $8.”
