Fans call new WhatsApp emoji react feature ‘best thing that’s ever happened’

A new emoji reaction feature on WhatsApp has been applauded as one of the best additions to the app since its launch.

WhatsApp users can now mark any message with one of six emojis. Similar to chat app Slack, this lets you show your mates exactly what you think of their banter—as long as it's positive, as there's no angry reacts available.

The new tool currently lets you send either a thumbs up, a red heart, a cry-laugh face, a sad face, and the 'praying' emoji.

One Twitter user said the new feature "is the best thing [that's] ever happened". Another said: "I'm truly happy by the WhatsApp reaction feature, now I can end conversations easily!!"

How to react on WhatsApp using emojis

Sending message reactions on WhatsApp works in a very similar way to Facebook Messenger reactions.

All you have to do is long press any message you've received. Six emojis will appear. You just tap the one you want and it will pop up on the message.

This should let your friends know how you're feeling about what they said, without having to actually write anything.

Message reactions aren't the only new feature coming to WhatsApp.

The app recently added disappearing messages. Just like Snapchat, your messages will self-destruct after a set period of time for additional privacy.

The app is also set to start working on multiple devices at once, meaning you'll no longer be stuck with one phone when it comes to using the app.

WhatsApp is owned by Meta (formerly Facebook), and sits alongside Instagram and Facebook as one of Mark Zuckerberg's key business areas.

It uses end-to-end encryption to ensure nobody can snoop on what you send to your friends.
