The Broadway stars gather together to pay tribute to the late legendary composer with a special performance from ‘Sunday in the Park in George’ in Times Square.
AceShowbiz –Sara Bareilles, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Josh Groban were among those who gathered together to pay tribute to the late Stephen Sondheim. The Broadway stars with other members of every Broadway company performed “Sunday” to honor the legendary composer.
On Sunday, November 28, the musical theater stars joined the choir to sing “Sunday” from Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George” in Times Square, New York. “This felt like church,” Sara told Variety. “In his remembrance, we did what theater does best. We sang and raised our voices and came together in community.”
“Everybody who’s here has a touchstone for why Sondheim’s music has brought them to this place,” Josh added. The “You Raise Me Up” hitmaker went on to say, “And whatever part of the entertainment industry we’re in, everybody is here because we were first influenced by Sondheim’s music. To mourn his passing is a crushing blow.”
Sara also turned to her Twitter account to share her thoughts about the touching performance. Retweeting a series of photos from the event, the “She Used to Be Mine” songstress wrote, “Such a joy. A tremendously aching joy.”
Stephen passed away on Friday, November 26 at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut. According to F. Richard Pappas, his attorney and friend, the Broadway legend passed away “suddenly” after celebrating Thanksgiving with his friends.
Following Stephen’s sudden death, producer Cameron Mackintosh issued a statement that read, “The theatre has lost one of its greatest geniuses and the world has lost one of its greatest and most original writers.” Cameron added, “Sadly, there is now a giant in the sky. But the brilliance of Stephen Sondheim will still be here as his legendary songs and shows will be performed for evermore. Goodbye old friend and thank you from all of us.”
Celebrities also paid homage to the legendary composer, including Anna Kendrick, who said that she suffered “a devastating loss” after Stephen’s passing. Meanwhile, Hugh Jackman tweeted, “As millions mourn his passing I also want to express my gratitude for all he has given to me and so many more. Sending my love to his nearest and dearest.”
Idina Menzel also took to her Twitter account to express her condolences. “Goodbye dear sir. We will spend our lives trying to make you proud,” she wrote. Barbra Streisand added, “Thank the Lord that Sondheim lived to be 91 years old so he had the time to write such wonderful music and GREAT lyrics!”
