Newcomer to the reality series Chef Matthew has raised some eyebrows after two absences during Below Deck Mediterranean’s latest charter. Now the voyage has come to an end behind-the-scenes, bosun Malia White has spoken out about one of his most controversial moments in the Bravo show.

Matthew Rhea was ‘shocked’ when he was asked to provide meals for the Lady Michelle crew, bosun Malia White has claimed.

The new arrival has drawn mixed reactions from viewers and cast members alike during the sixth instalment of the popular Below Deck spin-off.

As the show’s new chef, Rhea was tasked with organising the superyacht’s luxurious menu and dealing with the charter’s disobedient crew.

During a recent chat on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Malia White dropped in to field fans’ most pressing questions about the new season.

One viewer asked: “Why do you think Mat was so shocked when he was asked to cook crew lunch?

“Even on an off day isn’t that a part of every yacht chef’s job description?”

Chef Matthew was visibly frustrated when he was tasked with providing the entire crew’s lunchtime meals during the yacht’s drop-off days.

White came to his defence, suggesting he was simply surprised when he was lumped with even more cooking duties during Below Deck’s already tight filming schedule.

“It’s definitely something every chef has to do,” she explained.

“I think he was just shocked… I think maybe he thought during filming, things would be different, but it’s not.”

The chef also weighed in on the issue himself in a recent Instagram post.

Shea claimed he had already been told by producers he wouldn’t have to provide lunch for the charter in between filming.

He was therefore understandably quite overwhelmed when Captain Sandy Yawn told him otherwise once Lady Michelle had already set off.

“Been getting a lot of c**p for getting upset about crew lunch on drop-off day,” he vented in a recent IG Story.

“I got an email from production before filming saying I don’t cook lunch on drop-off days.

“Because of this, I made crew Eggs Benedict at 10:30 this day. There’s way more that happens than what you see!”

The chef also revealed a number of additional factors which made his job much more difficult during this particular charter.

This included the lack of a sous chef to help him in the kitchen, little to no breaks during shifts and provisions arriving just three hours before the guests.

Despite the complications, Chef Matthew committed to his challenging new role and the results were well worth the effort.

“It was delicious,” the bosun told BravoTV.com about his cooking.

“I think compared to some of the other chefs that we’ve seen, we don’t see the same level of plating, but his food, taste-wise, is absolutely amazing.”

Below Deck Mediterranean season 6 continues Mondays on Bravo. Episodes are available a week earlier on Peacock.
