Former Slipknot drummer and co-founder Joey Jordison has died at the age of 46.
A statement from his family did not disclose the cause of death, but did share that he had died ‘peacefully in his sleep’ on Monday. A private funeral service will be held at an undisclosed location.
The family said: ‘We are heartbroken to share the news that Joey Jordison, prolific drummer, musician and artist passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 26th, 2021. He was 46.
‘Joey’s death has left us with empty hearts and feelings of indescribable sorrow.’
‘To those that knew Joey, understood his quick wit, his gentle personality, giant heart and his love for all things family and music.
‘The family of Joey have asked that friends, fans and media understandably respect our need for privacy and peace at this incredibly difficult time.
‘The family will hold a private funeral service and asks the media and public to respect their wishes.’
Jordison launched the Iowa-based heavy metal group Slipknot, who were known for wearing masks in their performances, in 1995 with the late bassist Paul Gray and percusionnist Shawn Crahan.
It went through various line-up changes before settling on nine members: Jordison, Gray, Crahan, Craig Jones, Mick Thomson, Corey Taylor, Sid Wilson, Chris Fehn and Jim Root. They would stay together for more than a decade.
The drummer appeared on five of their studio albums before he left in 2013.
He went on to form Scar The Martyr, for which he also played drums, and was part of the bands Korn, Murderdolls and Sinsaenum.
At the Golden Gods Awards in 2016 he revealed that around the time he left the group he was battling a rare neurological condition called transverse myelitis, where the spinal cord becomes inflamed.
Speaking on stage he said: ‘I lost my legs. I couldn’t play anymore. It was a form of multiple sclerosis, which I don’t wish on my worst enemy.
‘I got myself back up, and I got myself in the gym, and I got myself back in f**king therapy to f**king beat this s**t.
‘It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, more than f**king anything.’
He added: ‘To people with multiple sclerosis, transverse myelitis, or anything like that, I am living proof that you can f**king beat that s**t. And f**king metal and all of these fans will do it for you.
‘This is the f**king world right here. You can beat this s**t. No joke. Just the fact that metal lives in your heart, you can f**king accomplish anything.’
