Video game music at the Olympics? What a time to be alive.
Gamers everywhere noticed an interesting trend during the beginning of the 2021 Olympic opening ceremony: Famous tracks from certain video games were being played. Among them, songs from “Ace Combat,” “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Final Fantasy”:
One song in particular, though, is an interesting one and it has a bit of a darker and relevant meaning.
“Song of the Ancients” from the “NieR” soundtrack tells the plot of the video game: the story of a black book that caused a plague on mankind, virtually ending all life on Earth as we know it, with its opponent, the white book, restoring order.
Art imitates life, and all, given the coronavirus pandemic and the vaccine currently being administered around the globe. Seems pretty fitting.
There’s a small catch: The song lyrics are gibberish and an amalgamation of different languages — known as the “Chaos” language in the game universe — which is particularly fitting of the Olympic opening ceremony, where athletes from all around the world are gathered to compete.
The song has appeared in the “NieR” series as well as the “Final Fantasy” series, both from companies based in Japan.
Still waiting for that “Super Mario Bros.” theme music to hit, though.
