Taking it easy: Victoria Beckham has given an insight into how her family spent lockdown during a chat with Emily Sheffield for London Rising on Thursday
Victoria and husband David, 44, spent the first lockdown in the Cotswolds with children Romeo, 17, Cruz, 15 and Harper, nine – while eldest son Brooklyn, 22, spent some time with fiancee Nicola Peltz, 26, in the States.
Speaking about her experience, Victoria revealed that although she wanted to wear something ‘more casual’, she refused to sit around in loungewear.
She explained: ‘At first it was a novelty… I love to dress up, and put makeup on and do my hair. It’s who I am.
‘I don’t just dress up to look a certain way for other people, I do it because it makes me feel good about myself.’

She continued: ‘Obviously I was a little bit more relaxed at home but i still wanted to make an effort. I wasn’t going to automatically put on sweatpants – even if they are very nice Reebok sweatpants!
‘I wasn’t just going to give up and put on an elasticated waistband.’
Emily mused: ‘It seems David doesn’t like you in too many saggy sweatpant looks,’ to which Victoria replied, ‘I don’t know. He likes me to dress casually but every day I was still working.
‘When it started to get difficult and the weather wasn’t so great and the novelty had worn off I’m a bit of a cheerleader for the family.
Not her style: The 47-year-old designer revealed that unlike most of the nation – she refused to wear loungewear in the house (pictured in 2017 in a very rare sighting in loungewear)
‘I wanted to wake up and be positive, and I did feel positive, so for me to put on nice clothes and put a bit of makeup on – I’m not saying I was wandering around the house in super high heels – I don’t want to shatter the illusion but I still wanted to make a bit of an effort.’
Revealing how they kept the kids entertained, Victoria said: ‘When lockdown first happened, the schools closed and we said the focus has to be the children.
‘We wanted kids who come out of lockdown happy and free spirited. Yes we have to do schoolwork but it’s a time for the family to be close, to communicate. It’s the most important thing to sit and watch movies and cuddle with the children – and yes have a bottle of wine – that’s ok!
Positive: Discussing how the family coped in the last year, she revealed that she acted as a ‘cheerleader’ for the family and was determined to keep their spirits high
‘But to just spend time together, communicate and talk to the kids, because the little people felt very very nervous and vulnerable during this time. They just don’t know how to vocalise this.’
The mother-of-four also revealed that homeschooling daughter Harper, nine, during lockdown gave her a greater appreciation for teachers.
Speaking about Harper and Cruz’s return to school, she revealed: ‘They were so happy. I mean, our kids love going to school for social friends. They work hard at school.
‘But I’ve never seen my kids so excited to go back to school and it was lovely to see. We forget how much they have missed.
‘I think mine actually appreciate school more. Because they’ve seen actually that without it, life was a bit lonely. And how much do we appreciate teachers now?
‘I appreciate teachers so much more, homeschooling is no joke. I can run a business. I can sit in a board meeting. No problem. Yeah, home-schooling the kids is really, really, really tough.’

After Brooklyn returned to the States, the family were reunited again at Christmas when the Beckham brood flew over.
The move raised eyebrows, as Tier 4 rules in place over much of the UK at the time said travel abroad was restricted unless it is for business purposes.
However, Victoria explained: ‘We were in Miami when the lockdown rules changed.
‘It was announced the schools weren’t reopening and David is a owner of Miami football club and hadn’t been able to get to the club for over a year because of lockdown.
‘So he said, “I need to stay here, there’s so much work to be done”. He’s invested so much in this club, it’s been his dream. The fact he could physically be there was an incredible time for him. I was just happy for him. There’s only so much he can do remotely.
‘If we’d come back here [to the UK] we’d have been separated as a family so that’s why we decided, we’ll stay together.
‘I was working remotely and it is what it is. I was just happy we could all be together and support him, and be part of this journey with what he’s doing. We’re so proud of him’.
The family moved back to the UK in secret this week four months of living in Miami.
The couple left Florida and are now enjoying the new lake they have created on the grounds of their luxurious £6 million Cotswolds home.
