[There are major spoilers ahead for the finale of season 4, episode 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale. If you haven’t made it to the train scene yet (IYKYK), hop out of this post rn!]
Okay, there is literally so much to unpack from the first three episodes of this new season of The Handmaid’s Tale. Hulu dropped the episodes early, and boy, were they action packed. The final scene of the third episode is what we’re going to focus on here. After June and co. are taken into custody and told they’re going to a Magdalene Colony, they attempt an escape, and there are some very tragic consequences (mainly the death of Alma and Brianna, who get hit by the train.) But fans on Reddit found some holes in how the whole thing went down.
Basically, it seems really implausible that the handmaids in question, who had just freed 86 kids and had evaded capture at least a few days, making them maybe some of the most famous criminals in Gilead, would be allowed to just… sit in the back of the van with Aunt Lydia during this transfer. Especially with June’s track record as a major instigator of all the things. As Reddit user @MistQuill points out, their hands were technically tied, but really? No security? The driver got out of the van and didn’t even lock the doors! And it was a very standard van, too. No extra bars or anything! IDK, it just seems like their escape shouldn’t have been *that* easy.
Which is maybe why, narratively, two characters died right afterward. The Handmaid’s Tale tends to let its characters take two steps forward and then, like, 1,023 back. But still! Either way, it’ll be very interesting to see how far June and Janine get on the “other side.”
