U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson also issued a statement, saying he received the news “with great sadness,” and that Prince Philip “inspired the lives of countless young people”.

“He helped to steer the Royal Family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life.”

Prince Philip was also one of the last surviving people to have fought in World War II.

The prince married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen. He was the longest-serving royal consort (the spouse of a ruling king or queen) in British history.

Our thoughts are with Prince Philip‘s loved ones at this difficult time.
