The actor, 60, hit headlines when police arrested him and sex worker Divine after nabbing their illicit liaison in a car parked near Los Angeles’ Sunset Boulevard.

Recalling the headline-making scandal, he said: ‘I was about to launch my first Hollywood film – my timing was impeccable. My problem was – that was my first Hollywood film and I’d just been to see it.

‘The film was about to come out a week or two after that, and I had a bad feeling about it. I went to see a screening. Everyone in it was brilliant, but I was so atrocious that I was not in a good frame of mind.’

With his mood worsening as he questioned his own performance in the romantic comedy – which also starred Julianne Moore and Robin Williams – Hugh revealed he went to down his sorrows, before ‘one thing led to another’.

He said: ‘I had a Ken Russell kind of lunch – and one thing led to another. I just was disappointed in myself. I don’t know what was going on. It was called Nine Months.’

Despite his concerns, the film went on to debut at number 3 at the US box office, with an opening haul of $12.5 million before grossing $138.5 million worldwide.

The film, which opened behind Apollo 13 and Under Siege 2: Dark Territory when it debuted two weeks after the incident, helped catapult him into superstardom.

He added: ‘The film did alright at the box office, in fact I think it did quite well, and that’s all Hollywood really cares about.’

At the time, Hugh was famously arrested near Sunset Boulevard after paying around £45 ($60) for Divine to perform oral sex on him in his car.

Hugh was sentenced to a fine of $1,000 (£761) and ordered to attend an education programme about AIDS.

Divine was sentenced to 180 days in prison for engaging in lewd conduct in a public place, and had also violated her probation for previous prostitution charges.

In a statement at the time Hugh said: ‘Last night I did something completely insane. I have hurt people I love and embarrassed people I work with. For both things I am more sorry than I can ever possibly say.’

Divine, real name Stella Marie Thompson, went on to make around $1 million through the publicity surrounding the scandal.

Following the scandal, Hugh and Elizabeth remained together for a number of years, before ending their 13-year romance in 2000. They remain close friends.

The godfather: Despite their subsequent split in 2000, Hugh and Elizabeth remain good friends and he is a godfather to her 18-year-old son Damian

Hugh looks back on their relationship with fondness and has previously dubbed himself an ‘idiot’ for the sex scandal as he reflected on their strong bond.

Speaking in a 2018 interview with Jess Cagle, the actor said: ‘We’re like brother and sister… I think it’s partly because we went from zero to somewhere together.

‘We went through terrible years at the beginning when neither of us had any work, living in a tiny flat. It was quite bonding.’

He reflected on the fiasco: ‘I was just an idiot. I didn’t try to say, “I’ve got this psychological problem.” I just said, “I did it”‘.

Hugh is now the godfather to Elizabeth’s son 18-year-old Damian, whose businessman father Steve Bing took his own life last year.
