What Is Amazon Doing With 'Lord of the Rings?'

Lord of the Rings is coming to the small screen. Amazon Prime Video is venturing to make the next Game of Thrones with its interpretation of the J.R.R. Tolkien universe, and fans will be excited to know the two-part pilot episode is reportedly already in post-production. While the series doesn’t have an official debut date yet, fans are eager to know: What is Amazon doing with Lord of the Rings?

J.R.R. Tolkien’s estate had strict conditions for Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ TV show

For starters, the series won’t touch on anything that happens in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings stories. Tolkien’s estate was clear with its conditions when striking a deal with Amazon: the show could only focus on the Second Age of Middle-earth. That time period spans thousands of years, and covers the rise and fall of Sauron, so there is a lot to cover. But that is the one condition Tolkien’s estate had in order to green-light the series for Amazon.

The show is also working with Tom Shippey, a Tolkien scholar, in order to craft the story, and Peter Jackson told Metro U.K. he is willing to give advice if needed.

The Amazon ‘Lord of the Rings’ synopsis promises ‘familiar’ characters and ‘the greatest villain’

A LOTR fan site, TheOneRing.net, shared the first reported synopsis of the upcoming series on Jan. 12. The site is followed by the Amazon series’ Twitter account, and has retweeted some of its past reports, indicating that the fan site shares accurate information.

According to The One Ring, the show will have “familiar and new” characters and will, indeed, focus on Sauron in some way. It said:

“Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.”

Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ shared a teaser map of Middle-earth

The synopsis also teased the possibility of Numénor—the greatest kingdom of men in Middle-earth that has not yet been seen on screen—could be a major setting of the series. As it read:

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

The series also shared a teaser map of its Middle-earth on Twitter on March 7, 2019, which featured the island of Numénor. The series will reportedly be focused on humans in Middle-earth, whereas the Jackson series focused on hobbits, elves, men, and more.

The pilot episode it reportedly already in post-production, but keep your eyes peeled for updates from Amazon.
