Are you ready to pop the champagne and put 2020 behind you in every way possible? Same! Like… seriously, same. It’s hard to believe that there are actual new things to look forward to in 2021—like television shows! If we’re going to be sitting in our homes for a few more months, thank god there’s good TV to look forward to. We’ve got a list of the hottest new shows we’re going to be buzzing about in the new year.
There are plenty of anticipated returning shows as well, like Riverdale, Dickinson, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Cobra Kai, The Walking Dead, Dead To Me, Grace and Frankie, The Witcher, Emily in Paris, Sex Education… you name it! It’s gonna be a good year for TV. I’m calling it now. Hopefully one of these sparkly news shows will capture your heart and keep you stuck to your couch in the same way.
The Watch
Premieres on BBC America Jan. 3
Fans of The Boys’ satirical take on superheroes are definitely going to want to check out this fantasy series about… cops and goblins? It also has dragons? The Watch looks super funny, but until it premieres, find someone who’s read the Terry Pratchett novels the show is based on if you have questions, because I have no clue what’s going on.
Mr. Mayor
Premieres on NBC Jan. 7
Tina Fey (SNL, 30 Rock) and Ted Danson (Cheers, The Good Place) seem like an inevitable NBC team-up, doesn’t it? Sure, I’ll escape real politics with fictional politics.
Call Me Kat
Premieres on FOX Jan. 7
This multi-cam adaptation of a British sitcom starring Mayim Bialik also has the celebrity you and everyone you know became obsessed with in quarantine: Leslie Jordan. Say no more!
Celebrity Wheel Of Fortune
Premieres on ABC Jan. 7
I know this is a low brow and just a new spin (get it) on an old show but STFU I’m looking forward to watching famous people shout “BIG MONEY!” Thank you, Wheel of Fortune.
WandaVision
Steaming on Disney+ Jan. 15
Want to see Elizabeth Olson pay a cheeky homage to her sisters’ Full House days with a send-up of classic sitcoms? That’s all I can tell you about this Marvel show (you read that right) because it’s so weird and mysterious that even superfans are just theorizing. People are definitely going to be talking about this one.
There are two other Marvel shows allegedly coming to Disney+ next year, Loki (helloooo Tom Hiddleston) and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (helloooo Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan) but 2020 filming delays mean we don’t have 2021 release dates yet. You may have seen pictures of the Hawkeye series with Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld (!!!!!) filming in New York in December, but that is sadly not expected to drop until 2022.
Firefly Lane
Streaming on Netflix Feb. 3
She was on Grey’s Anatomy; she was on Scrubs. Can I make any more obvious? Getting major heartwarming This Is Us vibes from this Netflix series (based on a New York Times bestseller) about decades-long BFFs starring Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke. I will be pouring wine. I will be binging this and live texting all my longterm besties.
Clarice
Premieres on CBS Feb. 11
Pros: It’s about Clarice Starling and takes place after Silence of the Lambs. The vibe seems very true crime, which is intriguing. Cons: Hannibal Lecter is not in this show. Rude!
Superman and Lois
Release Date TBD
I see you, The CW, giving me cottage-core superheroes.
The Gilded Age
Release Date TBD
I, for one, am very much looking forward to the first HBO series from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes about rich Americans in the 19th century. It has been in the works for at least four years. I’m sure it will come out… eventually.
The Nevers
Release Date TBD
Another upcoming HBO show that is supposed to come out this summer, The Nevers is about a gang of Victorian women with supernatural abilities. Wish we knew more!
The Gossip Girl Reboot/Revival Series
Release Date TBD
She’s back! I mean… is she back? Surely Dan Humphrey is still not blogging about teenagers in the Gossip Girl universe. (If he ever was in the first place. Let’s not get into how that reveal makes literally no sense.) The HBO Max reboot/sequel series started filming at the end of 2020 and is easily one of the most anticipated new shows of 2021.
The Rogue One Spin-Off Show
Release Date TBD
This is another mysterious Disney+ show, set in the Star Wars universe, allegedly coming out in 2021. It stars the very handsome and charming Diego Luna, so it’s sure to be as much of a BFD as The Mandalorian.
A Lord of the Rings Series?
Release Date TBD
With all of the success Marvel and Star Wars have had on television, you know Lord of the Rings had to get in on the fun. They cast, like, fifty people in this thing. Our one request? No Baby Gollums, please.
Walker
Release Date TBD
Have you noticed that, like, almost all of these shows are based on a book/movie/existing television show? Anyway, here’s a Walker Texas Ranger reboot starring the guy from Gilmore Girls and Supernatural.
