She started her music career in the 1960s, as a backup singer on songs like “Be My Baby” and “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.” Cher’s husband, Sonny Bono, felt she had great potential, but she was too nervous to sing on her own. The pair formed a duo known as Sonny and Cher.
In 1965, Sonny and Cher released the iconic song “I Got You Babe” and Cher rocketed into the spotlight. Their success as a duo lasted about a decade.
After that fizzled out, she went on to a solo career. She had several hits, and by the 1980s, she was a well-known musician. At this time, she also began to act, with leads roles in Silkwood and Mask.
Cher continued to work on her music and tour the world, putting on unforgettable concerts. Her stage presence is legendary, and fans adore her iconic fashions and unique looks.
In the late 90s, Cher released the song “Believe”, which became a top dance hit around the globe. In 2018, she found herself back on the big screen in the musical Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
When did Cher meet Sonny?
Cher was 16 years old when she met Sonny in a coffee shop. He was 27 years old and married at the time, but separated from his wife. They had a platonic relationship at first, moving in together as friends and roommates.
Eventually, the two formed a romantic relationship, and they were married in 1964. This marriage was actually not legal, and they didn’t get legally married until 1969.
Their music career began to fizzle out toward the end of the 60s, but in 1971 their television show aired–The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. The show was similar to their stage act, where they picked on each other and made jokes at each other’s expense.
Their professional careers were back on track, but the couple’s personal life wasn’t doing so well and the pair decided to separate.
Did Cher’s fashion choices center around her beloved wigs?
In addition to being a talented musician and actress, Cher might be most well-known for her incredible fashion sense. Her wild, cutting-edge ensembles often included dazzling wigs.
On The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, she embraced eye-catching fashions that delighted audiences. During that time, she seemed to have a love of Native American-inspired outfits, and sported several headdresses. One sparkling, all-white outfit included a massive, flowing headdress made of luxurious white feathers. Another, more colorful headdress had a wilder look, boasting black, pink, and purple feathers which stood out around her head like a halo.
In 1979, the cover photo from Cher’s The Prisoner album shows the diva wearing nothing else but an elaborate wig of delicate, gold shimmering strands.
At the Academy Awards in 1986, Cher stunned fans with a black sequined, mid-riff baring dress complete with a huge black spiky wig.
A live performance in 2000, Cher wore what might have been her largest wig ever–an enormous feathered mohawk piece that resembled a Spartan warrior’s helmet.
Cher’s wigs have always been a staple of her wardrobe. Her wigs are so important to the singer, in fact, that one of the demands in her contract is an entire room dedicated to her wigs.
