Pub-goers were left stunned when a stampede of cattle ran through a Somerset high street over the weekend.

Around 85 cows thundered past the Phoenix Hotel in Chard town centre, in the south-west of England, on Saturday.

Police were called out to the unusual scene, which was caught on the hotel’s CCTV, at 9.45pm after receiving several calls from members of the public.

Officers closed several roads so they could round up the herd with help from residents.

The situation was brought under control by midnight and nobody was hurt.

Steven Jones, manager at the Phoenix Hotel said: ‘It was unbelievable, we have never seen anything like it here before.

‘The cows were all moving at quite a pace, and a few ran past on the pavement right next to the pub.

‘It is lucky that it was not 10 or 15 minutes earlier, as a lot of people had just left and had been standing outside the pub.

Police were called out to the unusual scene, which was caught on the hotel’s CCTV, at 9.45pm after receiving several calls from members of the public.

‘I think the cows ended up congregating at the rugby club in the end and made a bit of a mess from what I hear.’

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary added: ‘We received several calls at about 9.45pm regarding cows in High Street, Chard.

‘Road closures were put in place at junction with Fore Street and A30 as a precaution.

‘It was estimated that about 85 cows had escaped.

‘Officers remained at the scene until about midnight as they and members of the public rounded up the animals.’
