Susan Sarandon is saying goodbye to the New York City apartment she’s called home for 30 years.
The Thelma & Louise star, 74, has sold her pre-war duplex, located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, for the asking price of $7,900,000, PEOPLE can confirm. The 6,061-square-foot space, which takes up the seventh and eighth floors of a co-op building, was listed by Nikki Field and Mara Flash Blum of Sotheby’s International Realty back in July.
The actress purchased the home with her then-partner, actor Tim Robbins, back in 1991, and took full ownership of it upon their split in 2011, the Wall Street Journal reported in July.
The exes share two sons — Jack, 31, and Miles, 28 — and Sarandon has daughter Eva, 35, from a previous relationship. All three kids grew up in the six-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bathroom home, and now that they have moved out Sarandon told WSJ it is simply too large for her needs.
Because it merges two floors — connected by a curved staircase — Sarandon said that the apartment was a fantastic family home and offered enough space, and privacy, for her children as they grew up and took on new projects of their own. She also used the seventh floor as a private area for guests — hosting friends, family and even some famous faces through the years.
Though the home boasts stunning features like a den with a wood-burning fireplace, a forty-three-foot terrace, a private gallery foyer and a sunken media lounge, one of the most notable rooms in the apartment is the blue-painted bathroom, which is often referred to as “the Academy Award bath.”
Sarandon has kept all of the awards she has received throughout her career in the bathroom — including her Oscar and SAG Award for Dead Man Walking and her 1995 Glamour Woman of the Year Award.
“I thought it was kind of funny to keep them in the bathroom,” she told WSJ. “When people come out of the bathroom, I expect them to be laughing but they don’t say a thing. Maybe they think I’m taking it seriously.”
Sarandon said that what she will miss most about the apartment is the incredible views it offers of the city around it — from the Empire State Building down to One World Trade Center. Even the bathroom in the master suite has a soaking tub overlooking the skyline.
“We saw the towers fall on 9/11 and we saw the sun rise again the next day,” she said.
A native of Queens, Sarandon said she is ready to bid adieu to her longtime apartment, but will never be ready to give up her status as a New Yorker. In July, she said she had plans to downsize nearby, and had been spending time social distancing with her family at their home in upstate New York.
“I’ve always been a New Yorker and I’ll continue to be a New Yorker,” she said.
