BBC sitcom Ghosts recently returned with a second outing to delight fans. Along with airing on BBC One in a weekly, linear fashion, the entire series was dropped on BBC iPlayer for those who prefer to binge their television. Express.co.uk has the lowdown on the future of the series including insight from the cast and creators.

Will there be another series of Ghosts?

Yes, the BBC has recommissioned Ghosts for a third outing, so fans have more supernatural shenanigans to look forward to.

When will Ghosts season 3 be released?

This will be dependent on the coronavirus pandemic which will affect filming on the third outing given Ghosts is known for its large cast.

Season two managed to wrap a week before lockdown and filming on subsequent series is likely to be subject to COVID-19 restrictions when filming.

Star Laurence Rickard said: “One of the trickiest things knowing how rules and regulations will change between now and February.

“Also, everyone’s got an eye as productions start to open up again now over how different productions manage things and how sets work.

“I think there’s a bit of us which is trying to keep an eye on avoiding unnecessary crowd scenes and things like that.

“We’re always trying to be bigger and better and more ambitious and I don’t think we’re tempering it in that sense, we’re just having to look at some of the practicalities of shooting with a slightly more intense eye.

“But we don’t know until we get to January, it’s very hard to know exactly what the parameters of shooting will be.”

However, there are hopes to start filming in February with the show hopefully coming out in the autumn of 2021 – but this will be dependent on the global pandemic.

The previous two seasons both consisted of six episodes and the third cycle is likely to follow suit with a similar number of instalments.

Season three could also be released in one go on BBC iPlayer as well as airing on a weekly basis.

Who will be in the cast of Ghosts season 3?

The main cast will be back with Charlotte Ritchie as Alison Cooper and Kiell Smith-Bynoe as her husband Mike Cooper.

Rounding off the more spooky members of the cast will be Martha Howe-Douglas as Lady Fanny Button, Mathew Baynton as Thomas Thorne, Lolly Adefope as Kitty and Laurence Rickard as Robin the Caveman.

Further cast members include Ben Willbond as The Captain, Katy Wix as Mary and Jim Howick as Pat Butcher.

There could also be some guest cast members making an appearance as the story expands.

What will happen in Ghosts season 3?

Fans can expect more of the same with the titular ghosts and the human residents having more misunderstandings and trying to get along in their home.

Speaking about whether there could be any character development going forward, co-creator and star Mathew Baynton said: “Part of the theme of the show is that even given eternity, people don’t basically change and that these are people who – some of them have been stuck in the house for decades and some of them for centuries.

“In theory you could learn every language and improve yourself and open your mind and expand all of the world’s history and knowledge but in reality you would just get up and repeat everyday the previous day and go, ‘I’m bored.’

“So that kind of helps us in terms of writing it that that’s there thematically anyway. So, we tease character change.

“I don’t think we’re that different from other sitcoms in that.

“You always take your character to the brink of some sort of realisation or change or whatever and then as long as they revert to type afterwards you can go back to square one for the next episode.”

So, there will be more cosy and silly drama from season three, but coronavirus could impact how the storylines will play out.

Is there a trailer for Ghosts season 3?

There’s no trailer yet as filming is unlikely to have started, so no new footage has been shot.

Any teasers or trailer will be dropped closer to broadcast, which is likely to be next year.
